Yes, on the Krog St sidewalk, right? Which I thought was the problem he's mad about.

No work is being done on the Krog Street sidewalk at this time. The work that is currently underway is on both sides of Wylie Street and the stretch of greenery between Wylie and Kirkwood.

If you are referring to "he" as in Ryan Gravel, I think his concern lies with moving the transit portion outside of the corridor

Because his original vision was transit in the corridor, but now the plan has been incorporated into the city's streetcar/LRT plan and includes crosstown routes, something his original plan did not include.

I'm saying closing the Krog St tunnel to cars and running the path through there would solve the apparent problem in this sentence:

Quote:
Our already-crowded trail would be permanently stuck through the already-congested Krog Street tunnel and its obvious traffic safety and capacity problems.
If you eventually build a new tunnel for a streetcar and a trail, then that's great.

Closing Krog Tunnel to cars really wouldn't work. It would push traffic onto Moreland and Boulevard, which are congested enough at peak times as it is.

What a bizarre thing to say. I don't understand the antagonistic attitude when I think everyone in the conversation wants the same end goal.

We need to get away from this idea that transit on the BeltLine is just a circle. It has evolved into a city-wide transit network, with crosstown connections (something Gravel did not include in this original vision.)

I love the newer streetcar plans but I think it is incredibly important to maintain the integrity of the loop that the Beltline creates. Maintaining grade separated transit is absolutely key. As a choice rider, when it transitions to street running, it looses a lot of appeal as a transit option. Not to mention, the Beltline loop directly connects places that are quite disconnected now. I totally get the Memorial jog, especially for now, but I hope the loop is completed one day in the not too distant future.

What if that on-street portion ran in dedicated lanes? Cheaper than tunneling, parts of Memorial have the ROW, and still serves a higher density corridor.

The part of Memorial we're talking about doesn't, though. From the western edge of Reynoldstown to Bill Kennedy way is only three lanes wide; I'd love to see dedicated lanes for the streetcar there but I don't see how the right of way makes it possible. I agree with Tikigod that the Memorial jog is alright but I'd rather see Beltline transit have a dedicated right of way everywhere it travels.

Of course the Beltline isn't "just a circle." 285 isn't just a circle either, yet we wouldn't want for part of it to run along surface streets, mixed with local traffic. Transit on the Beltline should be given the same level of importance.
