Default Relocating to Atlanta.. Job in Sandy Springs

My family and I are relocating to Atlanta this summer. I am looking to land a job in the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area. I have done some research on schools, etc and I really like Grayson. What is the commute like from Grayson to Sandy Springs? Are there other areas we should consider living in if Iam working on Sandy Springs? We are looking for houses in the low to mid 200's, so I know Sandy Springs itself is out. We also have a child that is in elementary school, so school is the number one priority.

Grayson to Sandy Springs (especially Central or Southern Sandy Springs) would be a very difficult commute during rush hour. I'm thinking in the neighborhood of 45 min.-1 hour. Caveat-if you leave home before 7:00 AM, it may be *a bit* better. Not a commute that I would choose unless absolutely necessary.

Take a look at East Cobb. Not a bad commute and excellent schools. You'd be able to find an older home but on a larger lot with that budget. Many young families here and lots of good shopping.

My husband works in Sandy Springs and we live in Alpharetta (exit 11). The commute on GA-400 depends on when you leave. If you leave at 7:15 AM you get to work in 15 to 20 minutes. If you leave at 7:30 or after it takes longer.
We have heard from people who live in Cumming that again, depends on the time you leave, it takes 45 minutes.

It just completely baffles me, with rising gas prices, food prices, and everything, why people want to purposely have 1 hour+ commutes one way to work. Why would you want to do that to yourself and your family?

Look, I understand people's desires for open spaces and more rural lifestyles. But, your job is in an urban area. You need to compromise - you can't have it all. There are lots of great, quiet residential neighborhoods much closer to Sandy Springs that you and your family would enjoy. I highly encourage you to do more searching for places closer to Sandy Springs. I feel that you will regret having such a commute and the added costs you will have.

Thanks to you all for your comments. They have been greatly appreciated.

To WXJAY, I appreciate your comment however it is quite judgemental. You have made some assumptions about us and our decision. We are still in the research stage and are simply asking questions.

Thanks

You can look at East Cobb which has great schools and Smyrna or if you are willing to do a condo, you can get a condo in Vining's Teasley Elementary school district. The school districts of Kings Springs and Nickajack school district in Smyrna have a lot to offer. Teasley Elementary in Vinings is the best in South Cobb. East Cobb, Smyrna and Vinings are just a hop over to Sandy Springs. Both East Cobb and Vinings are more expensive than Smyrna and it'll be tougher to find a home in the best school districts for mid 200s. There's a lot more in Smyrna but the schools aren't quite as good but still better than most of metro Atlanta.
