Help! Top 10 downtown Atlanta eyesore buildings, sites

Quote:
Downtown business development group Central Atlanta Progress on Friday released a flyer spotlighting 10 buildings and sites in the city’s core in need of redevelopment, many of them eyesores that have languished for years.

The original list included the Glenn Building and the Winecoff, now boutique hotels, and the Beaudry Ford site, which was demolished to make way for Georgia State’s mammoth University Commons.

“Nine out of the 10 projects that were cited for redevelopment in 2003 were completed,” said Wilma Sothern, CAP’s vice president of marketing.

The 12-story Beaux-Arts style Medical Arts Building, constructed in 1927, was the only property from the original list not redeveloped.

CAP followed up the original list with a new rundown in 2009. Several of the properties, including “The Gulch,” are on the 2016 list.

Downtown Atlanta’s Top 10 “development opportunities,” according to Central Atlanta Progress, are:

1. Medical Arts Building, 348 Peachtree Street

2. Wheat Street Gardens, 315 Irwin Street

3. Methodist Center, 159 Ralph McGill Boulevard

4. Rufus Rose House, 537 Peachtree Street

5. A group of four buildings at 222 Mitchell Street

6. Former Norfolk Southern headquarters, 99 Spring Street

7. The Gulch, Ted Turner Drive/Martin Luther King Drive

8. Constitution Building, 143 Alabama Street

9. Fulton Central Library, One Margaret Mitchel Square

10. Condo Parking Garage, 215 Piedmont Avenue

Plenty of potential locations for prime redevelopment in the urban core; close to transit, walkable, jobs, etc.

Wonder how this might affect a future MMPT. Otherwise, it would be nice to add more viable property around 5-Points.

4. Rufus Rose House, 537 Peachtree Street

This one should probably be relocated, but is well worth preserving. It's one of the last vestiges of the days when Peachtree was lined with the homes of Atlanta's gentry.

This is great news for downtown and historic preservation.

After reviewing a number of properties, global X elected to pursue the Medical Arts Building, and will ultimately facilitate the adaptive-reuse of the building, though it is still unclear exactly what the future will hold.

Here’s an excerpt from the press release prepared by Eastments Atlanta, detailing what’s known right now:

Just as it took decades to transfer the property to the current owner, the community should be patient as design and construction work is commenced in the coming months and years. Whether it ends up a hotel, office building, or functions for another purpose, Easements Atlanta... is confident that global X will create a fine product that will be a complement to the surrounding area and one that will spur continued reinvestment in that area on and near Peachtree Street.

I'm glad to hear this. That's an attractive old building that is well positioned.

Our house is about that age (or a little older) and these old places can be just fine with a little TLC.

Awesome! Now let's fill in the massive hole-in-the-ground parking lot, and do something better with the deck.

Also let's get the stitch built.
