AT&T has reached an agreement in principle to buy Time Warner for about $85 billion, sources said on Friday, paving the way for a blockbuster deal that would give the telecom company control of cable TV channels HBO and CNN, film studio Warner Bros and other coveted media assets.

I wonder what would happen to Time Warner's divisions (CNN, TBS, TNT, etc) in Atlanta, will they pack up and leave the city?

No.I highly doubt we will loose anything. We will gain probably.Consider Att was once headquartered here before the merger of Southwestern Bell and Bell South,
ATT Mobility has always been headquartered here as well.It was once Cingular.

I agree, this could actually be a big win for us. AT&T has Mobility HQ's here as you mentioned, as well as Uverse. They already have around 15,000 employees here.

Time Warner has some pretty serious infrastructure here across all of the networks, not easily duplicated elsewhere. The studios & offices for all of the non-CNN channels adjacent to Georgia Tech are state of the art, and tailor made.

I can see consolidation and several new divisions being created if this goes through, with some of them being based here to cement the combined companies investment. This is probably very good news for Atlanta in the long run.

My first thought when I heard about the deal was that ATT has always been very pro Atlanta - my how things are changing. I remember when ATT was broken up into the baby bells and now look where this has evolved!

Did that happen when AOL bought Time Warner?

It's not like AT&T has studios elsewhere for them to move into.
