My co-worker lives near downtown Alpharetta. I told him we are considering moving to Johns Creek, and he said he would never live in JC because the traffic there is so bad (not talking about getting to 400, but just driving around within the suburb).

That's surprising to me because I figured there wouldn't be much of a difference in surface road traffic east of 400 and west of 400. Do you guys have any insight on this?

I drive around in Johns Creek almost every day during lunch hour, because I like all the Asian restaurants along Medlock.

The traffic is always light, no congestion at all.

West side traffic along Hwy 9 and in the Downtown Alpharetta area is slower, at least during the day.

I think he's probably talking about all the cars either heading to/from 400, or crossing the river to/from Gwinnett in the mornings/evenings. That traffic is indeed insane. I guess the west side of Alpharetta has fewer bottlenecks, more roads.

John's Creek has far more 4 lane roads, so travel within the city is probably easier than getting around Alpharetta. But, for commuters, Alpharetta wins, it has more entrances and exits into the city.

Rush hour I might say JC is worse than Alpharetta (though both are bad surface street wise). During the middle of the day neither is that bad really.

Two main reasons why rush hour traffic in, or really, through Johns Creek is the stuff of nightmares are that there are a limited number of river crossings [5 travel lanes in each direction between 3 bridges from McGinnis Ferry to State Bridge], and those crossings are what stand between the 400 corridor and I-85.

Six one way, a half dozen the other. Take your pick.

Driving around JC is not an issue. I do it daily and don't have problems. Driving FROM JC to Midtown or Buckhead or [name an intown area] can certainly be a problem. But within Johns Creek / Duluth / Suwanee? Nah. It's just fine.

It was far worse before they widened McGinnis Ferry. It was always packed solid between 141 and the river, which had an overflow effect on all the nearby streets. And I'm sure widening Peachtree Parkway has made a big difference (altho technically that's not part of JC).

I live in JC (south & West part of the city) and can testify that one way commute towards midtown is one hour solid but very predictable during early rush hours (7:30 am and 4:30pm). It takes me 20min to get to the 400/Holcomb bridge. I guess you may shave 10 min if you live on the other side?

The plus side living in JC is, if 400 is really backed up, I can either go Barnwell or 141 as alternatives and it usually takes 1hr 10min top.

Here's the list of projects in N Fulton that would be funded by the Fulton County T-SPLOST being voted on next week:

http://www.fultoncountyga.gov/tsplos...ect_Binder.pdf

Long story short:

-Widening 141 (Medlock Bridge) to 6 lanes at least thru all of Fulton
-Widening Jones Bridge to 4 lanes from State Bridge to Old Alabama
-Widening Haynes Bridge to 4 lanes from Mansell to Old Alabama
-Widening McGinnis Ferry to 4 lanes between 400 and Sargent Rd
-Widening Old Milton Pkwy to 6 lanes in Alpharetta, then possibly State Bridge in JC (as a Tier 2 project)
-Widening a section of Windward to 6 lanes
-Improving Webb Bridge Rd (whatever that means)
-Constructing the Big Creek Pkwy in Roswell, to bypass Holcomb Bridge

So all that stuff should help Johns Creek a bit, once completed (if the SPLOST passes.)

But it seems like the 141 widening is going to really be dependent on Gwinnett/Peachtree Corners doing the same thing.
