Atlanta Hawks to own and operate NBA D-League team in College Park, per report - Peachtree Hoops

Imagining they will be playing in the Georgia International Convention Center, would be nice to see that place get some more use.

Now someone bring on some hockey ITP!!!!

Quick update on the new D league team, apparently CP is going to build a 3,500 seat arena on the GICC property. Ugh, another team gets a public handout. I don't really understand how a team like this is supposed to pull in fans when the real thing is right up the road. CP never appears to be hurting for money, but this seems like a poor investment. Oh well...

Sounds like they're going to use the space to the North of the current convention site that was supposedly set aside for a second ballroom. Whether people will go to the games or not, an arena has the potential to see plenty of use, especially in events like graduations and community events. Definitely more useful than Coolray Field.

This is a good thing for the Hawks in the long run. My Lakers have benefitted by having their D-League team right there in El Segundo. Some players have literally played a D-League game one night and then a Laker game the next night. I am sure that the same will apply with the Hawks' D-League affiliate being in College Park.

The 100,000-square-foot sports and entertainment project, called Gateway Center @ College Park, is being described as a major economic driver for the area. The Hawks’s G League squad—the franchise’s first development team based in Atlanta—will serve as anchor tenant when the arena opens in fall 2019, officials said.

Expect 3,500 capacity for basketball and 5,000 for concerts, convocations, and other uses.

Eh, as a fan of CP, I'm not cheering this on.

It seems redundant, won't be well attended less free tickets and I'm sure the Hawks owners found a way to put the overwhelming majority of financial liability onto the city instead of themselves.

I doubt this will be looked back upon as a good decision in 10 years

I’m sure the arena will be a multi purpose facility. Furthermore if the Hawks get hot, I can see it drawing big crowds.
