We are applying our oldest to several private schools, and he had his first observation (at our top choice location) this past weekend. He seemed fine, although somewhat lethargic (which we chalked up to nerves). Within an hour of getting home, he had a 103+ degree temp, and has been deathly sick the rest of the weekend. I don't expect for him to be able to re-do anything, but wondered if anyone else has ever been in this situation. Should I send an email to the school explaining that he was apparently sick but that we didn't know? Or do I just let it go?

Get a doctor's note immediately (I'm assuming he saw the doctor; if not, get there immediately) and send it along with an email. If he was lethargic and not his usual self, they need to know.

Thanks for the feedback. He is on the way to the doctor this morning. Fairly sure it is croup, but we will be sure to get a note and follow up with the school as an FYI. The school also happens to be my alma mater (and my husband's) so we are both pretty upset about the timing of this...

Do not stress. We had to call the day of and cancel due to illness once--the school was so accommodating. It was one of the competitive ones, and they were understanding and rescheduled us around our other observations. I think it happens pretty often--and he might have done fine anyway! A high fever usually *improves* my kids' behavior

You could also consider offering to have him come in at a different time when he is well. They may not take you up on it, but then again, they might (especially given legacy status). You can't redo JATP testing, but school observations might be different.

Thanks all for feedback. He just tested positive for strep...AND the flu. He must have felt absolutely awful. I am reaching out to the school now.

Poor guy! For sure let them know. They want to see the kids at their best.

Kids getting sick around other kids at school, yeah I'm pretty sure close to 100% percent of the population has been in this situation.
