I wonder the same thing myself sometimes, if overly competitive schools pay off for how rigorous their curriculum and how competitive the students are / are encouraged to be. I'd want to see a higher proportion of grads getting into Top 10 schools than your next best school. Being a big fish in only a local pond wouldn't be of much value unless you / your kids wanted to stay local for college.
