My husband is starting a job in Macon in a few months, but we were not in love with the area, and the housing market and availability of homes >20 years old is not promising. Are there any areas with subdivisions/housing developments and good schools that are closer to Atlanta and not horrible for a commute? How are Locust Grove and McDonough? There are a lot more job opportunities for me in the Atlanta area, but he doesn't want to commute more than 45 minutes to North Macon. We have kids that will be in school soon, so school district and resale values are important. We have a very good budget and the prices in GA are better than Charleston, so we don't have concerns there. Thanks for any advice.

Checkout areas south of Atlanta along I-75 in Henry County like McDonough, Locust Grove and Stockbridge.

There is a vibrant community of young families in Macon surrounding the university. It is a very appealing way of life (to me who suffers Atlanta traffic etc) and you could skip the commute. If your kids are not in school yet, it might be worth renting there for a year to get to know the ins and outs of the area and learn about schools from the locals. Am I correct that you are looking for homes that are greater than (>) 20 years old? If so, that should not be a problem in Macon. LOL. Perhaps you meant < less than 20 years old.

Sorry that was a typo. Definitely looking for homes less than 20 years old, the newer the better. We live in a subdivision with newer homes, sidewalks, amenities center and lots to do for kids, and would love something like that. The only thing we have seen so far is Providence. My husband will be working in North Macon, so we were only looking to live in that area. The schools in Macon are not great overall, but North Macon seems to have the best schools, at least elementary, and we really don't want to do private school. There are not a lot of rentals in the area. We have been looking for a few months already. I'm from NY and used to drive work all over the 5 boroughs, so I understand traffic. What is the commute like during rush hour from McDonough to downtown/midtown?

In Henry County, the best schools are on the GA 155 corridor (Woodland High, Union Grove High, Ola High) Of all of these, Union Grove is definitely the highest rated for achievement, but the others are not slackers either. All of these schools and their feeder patterns are on the far eastside of the county. Your husband will be in a reverse commute pattern. I would say 75 south from Ga 155 exit would be 35 to 45 minutes to the northern tier of the Macon/ Bibb city/county limits.
Union Grove High feeder pattern: Union Middle/ East Lake Elementary, Timber Ridge Elementary
Woodland High feeder pattern: Woodland Middle, Woodland Elementary, Pleasant Grove Elementary
Ola High Feeder pattern: Ola Elementary, New Hope Elementary, Rock Spring Elementary
