Any non-yuppie families in Roswell?
Hi-
Lived in Atlanta for a long time, my wife and I are early 30's, very successful people who live in Roswell. However, we do NOT like doubles tennis, or GOLF, or any of that yuppie drivel. We have tattoos. We like to hang out at our pool and drink some cocktails. We have a 7-year old who is a total rock star. But we have nothing in common with the uber-conservative people who live around us. And when I say conservative, I don't mean politically, since I like to keep my money and don't particularly like giving it to the government. We just don't have any trouble with cussing, raising a little hell, and enjoying life versus fearing eternal damnation.
So, any takers? Or pointers on where to meet interesting folks in North Atlanta?

You can't live in a suburb and wonder why your neighbors act so "suburban". If you want to meet interesting folks--get a hobby, join a club, do rec sports, move to a neighborhood where there are more people your age and at your point in life.

Yep, agreed, especially in Atlanta. I've found that no matter how hard I try, this is a segregated city in more ways than black and white. You can try to find what you're looking for in Roswell, and you may find the occasional family, but you're better off moving to an area where cussing and raising hell is celebrated. I'm just not exactly sure where that is.

Can you afford to move to the Little 5 Points area? I'm like you - in my 30s, professional, successful, have a family, tattoos (4 at last count), and listen to anything from Woodie Guthrie to System of a Down to Tool. Sounds like the only difference is that I don't mind so much giving my money to the guvmint - just as long as I get to tell them what to do with it (hear that Glenn Richardson?). You'd be welcome in my hood - good schools, too. No pools hardly, though, just the public one. Backyard pools are a suburban thing..

Of course the false dichotomy here is that people are either fundamentalist goody goody "yupies" who play tennis and golf, or they're cursing, easy riding, tatoo wearing, Jack Daniels drinking head bangers.
In the suburbs you'll also find fun loving people who drink, like to have fun, hate tennis and golf and don't give a rat's ass about religion. These people still pay their taxes, obey the law, respect their neighbors, fly airplanes as a hobby, play football, and like to hike and enjoy the outdoors. They also raise their children to be law abiding citizens who enjoy music and sports. In fact, I'm one of those people.
Like anywhere, you'll find people of all stripes and making generalizations is silly. We're not all stepford families just because we want a nice house, good schools, and a suburban way of life.

Why do people in the south say "cussing?" What is that? "CURSING!"
i don't know why tennis is so big. It's boring!

I live in Kennesaw and my husband and I are on an alta tennis team (we just started playing @ 1.5 years ago) and our team is full of some of the most non-yuppie people I have met.
I would say over half of us have tattoos. We spent a lot of the summer at the pool drinking and hanging out. Several of us spend a lot of our matches apologizing for the "cursing" that takes place on the court.
Granted we are all new to tennis so we suck. Maybe if we didn't get together to have a few drinks before we played a match we might be a little better.
Hope you find what you are looking for, but don't be so quick to group everyone that lives in suburbia into the yuppie group. Some of these people might surprise you.

Given the mainstreaming of tattoos, I would venture a guess that half your neighbors in Roswell have them too, but it's more of the tiny hidden dolphin/flower/chinese character variety than the full arm sleeve.
As for living in Roswell...I hear you. It would not be my cup of tea either. It seems like classic upscale Atlanta suburbia to me, with everyone trying to keep up with the Joneses. It sounds like you might be more comfortable in one of the many intown neighborhoods just east of the city. Midtown, Morningside, VaHi, L5P, Candler Park, Lake Claire, Inman Park, Cabbagetown, Grant Park, Edgewood, etc, all would be a better fit for your family, IMO.
If you are unable to move to a new neighborhood, take the advice of one poster and get out and do the things you want to do. Just because tennis and golf are big among Roswell-ites doesn't mean you need to partake. Buy a kayak and paddle the hooch on weekends. Throw some bikes in the car and go ride the Silver Comet, or better yet take mountain bikes up to North Georgia for some off road fun.
