Legislators may change city of Stonecrest before it starts (Roswell: house, bill)

The legislation, House Bill 600, was approved by DeKalb County representatives Wednesday and is pending in the Georgia House of Representatives.

It proposal comes as voters in Stonecrest, a city of 50,000 people in southeast DeKalb, are choosing Tuesday from 20 candidates running for mayor and City Council.

If HB600 passes, the five City Council districts will change so that none crosses I-20, said the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Doreen Carter, D-Lithonia. She said it will make district boundaries more closely reflect the community.

The legislation also limits the mayor to serving two consecutive four-year terms.

Looks like Stonecrest has a new mayor and council.

The new city of Stonecrest’s leadership is now set after voters chose their initial local leaders in runoff elections Tuesday.

Voters elected three council members to run the city of 50,000 people in southeast DeKalb County. They’ll join Stonecrest Mayor Jason Lary and two others on the council who won election outright last month.
