Looking at street view, the coils were not there in 2011, but were there in 2012. So, the stuff had been there about five years. But that also begs the question...why was that much material stored for five years...where was it slated to be used?

Wonder why the GDOT just "happened" to store flammable material in this exact location 10 years ago?
See, this sounds bats*** crazy, but it also sounds exactly like many conspiracy theorist types.

AFD has a fire station literally around the corner. Why is odd that they'd be there quickly? That's, uhmmmmm, sort of their job . . . right?

Has the recent I-85 fire and bridge collapse made you re-think a MARTA extension into Gwinnett? | | gwinnettdailypost.com

This was excess material for a DOT project from some 15 years ago, originally furnished by a contractor which went bankrupt, the material was stored at the DOT area on the hill next to Sydney Marcus until the 400/85 ramp project at that location about 5 years ago, when it was moved to the DOT storage area at this position. This area has been aDOT storage area since at least the early 90s, it is also where the HERO units are parked.

A mentally disturbed druggie arsonist started a fire near there that quickly got out of control.

That's not a weird enough story for some folks, so the tinfoil hats chime in.

Actually I'd better delete this before somebody starts repeating it and it becomes fake news.

No but I already supported MARTA in Gwinnett. This was a highly unlikely event. Only other bridge collapse not caused by natural hazards (hurricanes, earthquakes, etc) I can think of in the US was Minneapolis 10 years ago. I highly doubt Atlanta will have another catastrophic failure of a bridge in my lifetime. And I know, "snowpocalypse!"but that more of a failure of planning and poor timing. Weather conditions were worse this January but with excellent planning, impacts were minimal.

This is a short term, once in a lifetime event with impacts lasting maybe 2.5 months (if on schedule). Support for transit should be for long term issues with regularly occurring impacts.

Yep. People are acting like thermite was brought in by the military or something.

Station 29 is about 75 yards away from the site, right at the end of the Piedmont off-ramp. That was a stroke of luck, nothing more.

Yeah, I believe they said this morning the material in question was earmarked for a project that got backburnered.
