So How does GDOT Plan on moving some 225,000 vehicles into and out of atlanta now that 85 is outta comission for the forseeable future???? MARTA only goes to Doraville...what about the commuters comin from way out mall of georgia, lawrenceville, etc???? Atlanta is so anti train its rediculous..Well now theyve reaped what they sowed...we had over 100 million bucks towards the rail line to Griffin as a startup with many to follow. But nooooo the folks in the gold dome still think this is atlanta of 1950. The money was rescinded.

If the Long Islnd Expressway suffered a similar disaster here in NYC we have the Long island railroad...Nice 12 car electric trains moving over 1000 people PER TRAIN Moving folks into and out of New york penn station..Of course deliveries would be effected but as far as commuters ate concerned we wouldnt notice it...In fact we would run Extra service to accommodate all the dispaced drivers

Its Ironic that That there are RR tracks paralelling 85 for its entirety thru NE georgia...The same tracks that the current Amtrak route to new orleans uses...those same tracks COULD of been hosting several bi directional commuter trains back n forth from Gainsville to 5 points...Thus taking some pressure off of rebuilding this critical link of freeway...Now they HAVE to fastrack this rebuilding just to get back to the traffic ****show that already existed...Imagine in a perfect storm if this happened simultaneously along 75??? 2 Major highways out of commission...Atlanta would Come to a standstill.

The time is NOW Ive said this 100 times...BUILD COMMUTER RAIL NOT NOW BUT YESTERDAY!!!

Those are good points and good comments.

But the ultimate decider of whether commuter rail will be implemented and become operational throughout the greater Atlanta metro area and North Georgia will not be the Georgia Department of Transportation but will be the Georgia state government that controls GDOT and state transportation policy in general.

The current transportation emergency that has been caused by the collapse of the I-85 Northeast viaduct likely will not be enough by itself alone to be the impetus for the implementation of regional commuter rail service.

But the fact that tens-of-thousands of Northeast metro Atlanta motorists that otherwise would have used the out-of-service section of I-85 Northeast for commuting will now have little other choice but to use the MARTA Red and Gold Heavy Rail Transit lines for commuting will be an event that will have the potential to build public support for increased public investment in an upgraded and expanded regional rail transit network.

It looks like the state takes the commuter rail options seriously, at least along the I75 corridor.

One of the reasons for meeting with Deal was to ensure that as CSX prepares to renew its lease on the state-owned Western & Atlantic Railroad, the state doesn’t sign away the rights to use passenger rail on the tracks, which stretch from Atlanta to Chattanooga. Tippins said Deal was committed to preserving in that contract the state’s right to use commuter rail on the Western & Atlantic.

"Cobb Chamber of Commerce and the Cobb Board of Commissioners are interested in looking for solutions,” Tippins said. “I told him Cobb’s always interested in talking, but we want to know what the deliverables are. We want to know what’s being promised and the timeline and the cost and that’s always been the sticking point,” Tippins said.

“If you started a double MARTA track right now, I won’t live long enough to see it. It will take 15-20 years to get the thing done,” Tippins said.

On the other hand, adding passenger rail to the Western & Atlantic tracks would be far easier because the tracks are already used for freight.

“Talking in terms of economic development, when you say what can you do and how quickly can you do it, that is the quickest option,” he said.

They already pissed away federal matching funds for Lovejoy Line, but that didn't serve a republican-led county.

Until it's time to actually build it.

I do at least feel like Cobb commuter rail on the W&A corridor has a much better chance of happening (and within maybe 5-10 years), than HRT or LRT or even BRT for Cobb. Now whether MARTA will be involved in it, hard to tell at this point.

CRT does make the most sense, for a lot of reasons. One being that it could be focused completely on Cobb County, with only one station outside of the county, in Downtown Atlanta/ Five Points- and that MMPT station might even could be state-funded.

There probably would not be any stations in NW Atlanta (maybe Howell Mill), and Vinings would probably not get a station, so it might end up being a direct express shot between Cumberland and Downtown, which would be great.

Beyond Cumberland, you have obvious stations in Smyrna, Fair Oaks/Dobbins, Marietta, Barrett Pkwy (West Cobb), Kennesaw, and Acworth.

Just add more tracks/widen the corridor, build the stations- all of them very simple except the MMPT- then run the trains.

They aren't serious. Once they see that either another city or somewhere ITP will have the Amazon headquarters they will go back into hiding.

Nope. I'd be willing to bet an umbrella transit agency is a hot topic in the 2018 general assembly. Its been percolating since way before the Amazon rfp

I'm sure it will be a hot topic. The question is will it be handled well, or at all.
