I'm sure to rub it in, however it does have some merit. One of things that really bugs me about this country is that we cannot have a honest conversation with ourselves about the type of people that commit crimes like this crazy Midtown shooter dude.

It's interesting that how on the drop of a hat any high profile crime committed by someone from a poor urban neighborhood six ways to Sunday. The funny thing is that it all comes down to the same thing: If you are poor, the deck is stacked against you.

Pervasive substance abuse, crime culture formed from lack of economic or educational resources, lack of mental health services (or any affordable health services) usually lead down the same path. It doesn't matter if you come from the middle of a big city or a trailer out in Appalachia, you will have the same challenges in life coming out of an situation like that. Some times people crawl their way out, other times they do seemingly inhumane things to other people, but mostly they just repeat the same cycle of poverty generation over generation.

I haven't ready anything about the Midtown Shooter since yesterday, so I don't know if it came out, but i'd be shocked to learn that he didn't come out of a family that has struggled with poverty for generations.

You are lying. People don't claim that they are paying to be safe. They're paying to be SAFER than other parts of the city. Northern suburbs, even adjusted for affluence, have LESS dysfunction.

My guess is that he is trying to point out that even people who live in affluent (aka safe) areas are not immune to criminals and crime?

Well, duh. But equally obvious is that their chances of encountering it there are considerably less.
