I never thought I'd see this happen, but here it is: Harrison says operations streamlining will continue; 'I'm not a one-man crew advocate' | Trains Magazine

Elsewhere, CSX will look to close redundant yards. In Atlanta, for example, Harrison says CSX’s four yards could be consolidated into one super facility, with the real estate from closed yards sold off.
They don't mention specifics, but at a guess, he's talking about Tilford, Howell, Hulsey and Fairburn consolidating to Tilford. While I'm skeptical that they could consolidate Intermodal to Tilford, I still doubt they'd keep Hulsey over Fairburn so some of you may get your wish
There's also Palmer yard (between Dacula and Auburn) and Lithonia yard. I'm not sure if they meet the definition of Atlanta though.

The prospect of closing and selling off Howell and Hulsey Yards would be a huge step forward for intown resurgence.

Where is CQ? He should be doing cartwheels over this news.

As someone who, after several beers and holding it for a little too long, could take a wizz off my front porch and hit the CSX Hulsey wall, this is indeed an interesting potentiality.

Wasnt rail a big roadblock for the NW Beltline? If so, this is amazing news.

Whoa. This is almost as surprising as the Braves suddenly announcing they were leaving Atlanta.

Wonder if the Beltline knew about this when they put the Krog St route back on the table?

The only yard "in the way" is Hulsey and that's on the NE/SE beltline. The NW beltline wasn't going anywhere near any yards, and the rail lines are staying put.

Hulsey closing and selling + somebody GOOD redeveloping it (not Fuqua) + MARTA infill at Krog St = game changer for ATL.

Thing is massive. Could be not just a little bit of everything, but a lot of everything. Mid-rise dense residential, lots of retail, offices, the works. Green space in there too. Trendy market. Movie production studios. All kinds of possibilities. W/ transit.

The prospects for Hulsey are jaw-dropping, to say the least. My immediate thought was to compare this to the revitalization of Philadelphia's Center City in the 60's. The situations are remarkably similar; in both cases you're looking at a massive rail yard that was a major impediment to intown development.

Urban Renewal in Philadelphia

Hulsey Yard bisects some of the hottest intown neighborhoods in the city: Sweet Auburn, Inman Park, Edgewood, Kirkwood and Glenwood Park. Imagine the area with that impediment removed.
While you're at it, imagine the neighborhoods of West Midtown without the presence of Howell Yard.
