Default Visiting before moving

Okay, so everyone says to visit before you move there and that's what I'm doing next weekend. My question is similar to another post but I have no children and am more interested in seeing the city for what it really is rather than tourist attractions. What do you think are some key places someone should see before deciding to make the move??

I would drive the neighborhoods that you would consider living in. I think you would want to get a feel for exactly where in the city you might be spending most of your time. I live in Decatur (east of the City) and there are many, many places north, west, and south of Atlanta that I have never set foot in and probably never will.

Also, you may not want to do touristy stuff, but I would still recommend that you visit Piedmont Park and the Botanical Gardens (adjacent to the park). They are very nice, and underrated, attractions in the city.

Just sit in your car and look around and you'll get the real experience of living here! You'll get very comfortable with your surroundings...focus on the dashboard, radio dials, every now and then when you get an inkling, wipe off your seats with some Armor All. You don't even need to leave your own town to do this! Okay, I'm kidding...well, sort of.

If you come on a Friday, you'll get the true sense of traffic. I think that's valuable. After 7 pm, it'll open up and if you're here for the weekend you should see the following:
Piedmont Park and Botanical Gardens (as suggested by previous poster)
Swing by Virgina Highland
I'd actually drive Peachtree from Midtown to Buckhead just to get a sense of what they're doing development-wise.
*Neighborhoods...where are you thinking of living? I'd do a little drive by to some of these areas too...too many to mention
Other hotspots: Dekalb Farmer's Market, Chastain Park, Chattahoochee Nature Center, Atlantic Station...

I agree drive around the areas you are interested in. We visited the first time without a car and had a totally different impression on visit #2 where we rented a car and spend three days in it exporing the city. You get a much better feel for it. Have fun!
