When my wife and I moved from Washington State to Atlanta in 1997, the gasoline here sold for under 80-cents per gallon, while, at that same time, selling at roughly HALF as much as it was out there. (I believe it was around $1.45 p/g in Centralia, WA at that time.) Honestly, I was a bit shocked by the difference, and naturally very pleased.

Since that time, while the gas prices have universally soared, the DISPARITY in price has shrunk to near nil in comparing to the NW and other states' prices.

Heck, back then, Atlanta and Georgia had some of the lowest prices in the nation. What's happened to change all of that?! Is it tax-related, perhaps? Personally, I don't get it.

Gasoline tax information - Georgia Gas Prices

Might be your answer - Washington State (at least now) has almost 2x the tax on gas.

There might be more to this...but this is what I found with a quick search.
