Anyone see this?

I-75 truck lanes get a boost from Atlanta Regional Commission | Spinning our Wheels

My first time hearing about it.

While I'm not exactly compelled against it, I'm baffled as to how GADOT intends on funding it on their current budget because as it stands just about every penny they make would have to go toward it since there's no tolls.

The other thing that I kinda dislike as it does nothing for trucks in the Atlanta Metro specifically around the Perimeter area and I-285... I personally think they should start there first.

It's a glorified handout to the trucking industry.

I'd rather see a toll alternative to separate truck only lanes.

Those trucks supports a multi-billion dollar logistics hub that is one of the region's biggest economic engines.

Of course, doing nothing to support it for the last 40 years is why now New Jersey and Metro Atlanta are the two most hated areas and avoided if possible.

This would improve safety and help keep the area's logistics advantages. An outer loop for trucks only could connect all of the interstates and remove 2/3 of the 18-wheelers from freeways within the core counties.

And don't forget platooning technology, Georgia needs to quickly set the rules for trucks travelling in packs very close to one another.

One way it does make sense is with driverless vehicles. It seems likely to happen in long haul trucks on a widespread basis before individual automobiles.

driverless trucks would scare the ever living crap out of me.

My dad drives a 18 Wheeler for a living and let me say that there is ALOT more to controlling those things than an standard automobile and I doubt that a computer can account for all of the dangerous situations that can happen to a truck. Those things are carrying tons and tons more weight than a car.. they can't just slam on their brakes when an incident happens infront of them or they Jack-Knife and lose complete control.. I am having a feeling the system is going to be designed by a bunch of computer techies that have no idea what its really like to drive a big-rig.

Why is that the assumption, as if they wouldn't do their research and get driver input? It would be highly regulated. Now regardless of all that, I'd be scared too.

At least Jersey has separate (divided) truck lanes from the regular 95 lanes, but cars may also use them.

I work with computers on a daily basis and there is just no way that a computer can compensate and correct EVERY SITUATION on its own, otherwise I'd be unemployed. Same goes for self driving cars, auto piloting trucks, ect.. not saying great ingenuity isn't going into it.. but a real driver will ALWAYS be more flexible than a Computer will ever be assuming the driver is paying attention. A computer may be more ACCURATE, but regardless of how spot on it may be, a computer can only do what it's programmed to do.

I think we should give upgrading the rails between Atlanta and Savannah a good looking at. The ATL->Macon and Macon->Savannah routes are the most congested in the state, and are only going to get more so with all the port expansions coming online.

NS (and I think CSX) is doing some upgrade work, but the routes could really benefit from a proper double-tracking. And who knows, maybe we'd finally get some ATL -> Savannah passenger rail service out of it?
