Depends on what you consider the southside of Marietta. Different areas might include aging strip malls, poverty sticken apartment complexs, gentrifying residential or upper income residential. A lot of the areas southeast of downtown are industrial or light industrial uses. Dobbins Air Force Base sits directly south of the city boundaries (although the boundaries kind of rap around the base). What area of neighborhood are you looking at specifically?

The "southside of Marietta" is pretty varied, even if you're talking about Smyrna, Vinings, or Mableton. I can't speak for the schools at all (don't have kids), and the crime rate is probably not too bad, but both willl probably vary considerably depending on the specific location.

Cost of living isn't bad at all if you're coming from another similar metro area not on the left or right coast. We've found Atlanta in general to be roughly comparable to Minneapolis/St. Paul in most respects expensewise, although the housing in the Atlanta metro is considerably less expensive (might be due in part to the less extreme climate).
