Is it likely that the Equifax data breach could have local repercussions?

Equifax is one of our city's homegrown business titans with its headquarters smack dab in Midtown. Will there be any employment loss or other corporate changes, or will they ride this out? From what I've read this is one of the worst data breaches in history.

It'll be interesting to see if the SEC brings insider trading charges against the executives who traded Equifax securities before the breach was announced. I think that will be the biggest repercussion.

Apparently they learned of the breach back in July but didn't announce it until September.

143 million people potentially exposed?

Wow.

I am one of the 143 million. Not a happy camper. Now I get to decide which class action lawsuit I want to participate in.

I hate to say this for any employees out there, but I hope the company goes under. The level of negligence here is intense, the highest consequences are in order.

I want to see if the executives will be charged with insider trading. I also want to see how severe the punishment will be because I have a feeling they are going to get a slap on the wrist though they knew for how long that people's personal information was compromised; then, if that wasn't enough, they decided to cheat/steal and profit from it. Disgusting!

Exactly! That's the only way these companies listen is when you choke their wallet.

It will take years, and I doubt we will get anything compared to what we have lost (and who can put a price tag on our future troubles), but at least some lawyers somewhere will pocket some money and hopefully some good will come of it in some fashion.

I am all in for sticking it to them. Of all companies, this one should have had top security AND not waited to disclose.

Even if they settle for only $250 per person in damages -- which is peanuts for having your private data exposed -- that's still nearly $36 billion.

That's a pretty serious whack for a company that has annual revenues of $3 billion.
