So you'd have to probably be a gamer to understand this question....

I'm talking about the song Atlanta by the band Strawhorse. If you know it at all, it's probably because it was on the soundtrack for the game ATV Offroad Fury back in 2001. (or maybe it was the second game? I don't remember....)

But I don't think Strawhorse was ever signed and they appear to be from Boston. So, the question, do you think they are talking about our city? If so, what are they saying?

Quote:
Helpless child
Stainless soul
Never woke up this morning
Freak show goes
Squeeze reload
Random assassination
Southern heat
Tragedy
Left sweet Atlanta shaken

The world is talking about you
Not your private holy war

Bible belt
Night explodes
Cultural mutation
Deadly seals
Soon unfold
Atlanta's heart is breakin'

The world is talking about you
Not your private holy war
The world is talking about you
Not your private holy war

The truth lies buried, beneath our feet

The world is talking about you
Not your private holy war

If I had to guess, and I'm probably thinking too far into this, the song is about MLK's assassination. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the songwriter(s) knew King was from Atlanta but mistakenly thought he was murdered here too.

But ... Southern heat ... Bible belt. Yeah, I'd say the song is about the city. On some level anyways.

I always imagined it was about Atlanta's rise to fame after the Olympics, but the city couldn't get over its past and that held it back from achieving greatness.

But I'm sure that's probably not what they are saying at all.

You may be right. Specifically, the Olympic park bombing. And its perpetrator's religious bent.

(random assassination, tragedy, holy war)

Just a WAG but maybe it is some kind of allusion to the Eric Rudolph attacks around the Olympics.

The repeated phrase "private holy war," plus the references to "the night explodes" and "the world is talking about you" make me think of Rudolph's attacks on the Otherside and the abortion clinic. All that stuff got a lot of international attention.

Wow, that makes sense, I never even thought about that. I wonder why a band from Boston would care so much...they must have some Atlanta connection.

Totally makes sense now.

Well, the ATL was getting a huge amount of national and international attention for these terrorist attacks. First the Olympic bombing, then two more bombs at an abortion clinic and finally the bombing of a gay bar. Dozens of people were injured and two were killed.

That was followed by a massive manhunt for Rudolph that went on for years.

So it was pretty big news.

I sent a message to the band asking them what the meaning was behind the lyrics. I asked them to either post here or answer me back. Hopefully we will hear back one way or the other.
