But aren't most of these parking spaces required by our zoning laws?

Many of the students likely wouldn't pay for parking if it wasn't included, but if you make developers include parking in their buildings people will bring their cars for "free".

Even as is, kids these days are giving up on driving in records rates:

So I see no reason we need to mandate more parking for students today than they had at on-campus dorms 30 years ago.
