From WABE-FM/NPR radio:

Cobb County commissioners have approved the purchase of two more parcels of land for future park space this month. That brings the total amount to 100 acres so far.

Cobb voters approved a $40 million bond almost a decade ago, but the bonds were never issued. Back then, county officials said they delayed because of the recession.

Earlier this year, Cobb commissioners approved issuing the bonds. They’re now expected to generate about $24.7 million.

County spokesperson Ross Cavitt said the county is buying property for parks as fast as it can, but state law prohibits the county from buying land for more than its appraised value.

“The real estate market’s pretty robust in Cobb County,” Cavitt said. “And a lot of owners are reluctant to sell for the appraised value thinking that property values obviously are going up and they can get more money for them.”

The parcels of land the county’s bought so far are in Mableton and just outside Marietta.

Cavitt said the county is in negotiations for six other parcels and has three more in line to be appraised.

Sweet! Glad to see Cobb nailing down as much land as possible before the price totally goes through the roof.

Heh. I'll bet you $5 that the land is a preemptive buy to build Atlanta United a new stadium in a couple of years!

Default Visit Cobb’s Wildlife and Rain Garden

The Cobb County Water System has a Wildlife and Rain Garden.

The garden is located across the railroad tracks from the Extension Office in the Cobb County Water System Customer Service complex, behind the Water Quality Lab, and is accessible 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Visitors are welcome to stop by to explore the garden anytime. Visitors are also welcome to join the project workgroup on Thursday mornings.

Quote:
The Wildlife and Rain Garden at Cobb County Water System was created in 2004 for educational purposes, specifically to demonstrate storm water pollution prevention, with plantings designed to provide habitat to pollinators and urban wildlife. Many native species and specific butterfly host and nectar plants have been installed to showcase how-to attract animals to the landscape and provide a public space where people can see how rain and wildlife gardens can be created, maintained, and utilized. Visitors can observe pollinators utilizing this urban space, learn about citizen science projects they can participate in, and better understand the land ethic and recommended stewardship practices.

Default Another new park in development in Mableton

Another new park is in development on land with ties to the Civil War in South Cobb County at the northwest corner of where US 78-278/GA-8 Veterans Memorial Highway (formerly Bankhead Highway) crosses over Nickajack Creek in Mableton.

Quote:
A few weeks ago a group of people took a walk through the property on Henderson Road that will be developed into a new Cobb County park in Mableton...

... The property is adjacent to the Publix supermarket, just to the east of the supermarket along Veterans Memorial Highway. The Publix and the park are separated by a detention pond.

The Henderson Road park property includes clearly visible remnants of Federal earthworks from the Civil War, including trenches and cannon emplacements. Although Sherman’s main body of troops crossed the river to the north in Vinings prior to the Battle of Atlanta, both the United States Army and the Confederates built extensive fortifications near the Chattahoochee River in South Cobb.

I live in the area. I need to check out that park. Cobb also owns land along Nickajack creek adjacent to Veterans parkway. There is a lot more cool stuff they could do over here but it just takes taxpayer funds. There is a master plan to connect a lot of the trails in Cobb county to the various parks and the Beltline. If this happens it will really help the real estate values and standard of living.
