White Oak Hills Neighborhood
I'm relocating to Atlanta soon and I've been looking at homes in the East Lake/Oakhurst/Kirkwood area. There seem to be some beautiful newly constructed/renovated homes in the White Oak Hills neighborhood on the edge of East Lake, specifically on Alston Drive south of Memorial. Does anyone have any thoughts on this neighborhood, in terms of crime and safety? It seems kind of quiet and isolated, which I guess could be both good and bad.

White Oak Hills is a great neighborhood. Crime is on par with East Lake, Krikwood, Decatur (yes crime in Decatur) and maybe even a bit less. The neighborhood has built a great network of neighbors along with a very interactive relationship with DKPD to ensure safety is priority one. Being honest we live in an urban setting in Atlanta area so everything good or bad that goes along with it we have but as a neighborhood we address and look to make it better.
There are a lot of great things going, Dekalb is working on transforming the greenspace along memorial into a wonderful park, speed tables on White Oak Drive to cut down traffic and speed to make it even more walkable, many others
I just stumbled upon this as I am sure you have moved on but figured I would post for otheres that might have an interest in the area.

Have a friend who lives basically on the other side of Memorial from WOH and loves it. She is actually upset by talk that her side of Memorial may be annexed into the city of Decatur. I live in Kirkwood and don't think WOH has the same neighborhood feel, but you can get a whole lot more house.

East Lake Terrace ELTNA.
Kirkwood does have more of a neighborhood feel, but they have been around for how long? White Oak Hills is basically been around for a long time from the incorporation or plat but the neighborhood as an identity has been around a little over 10 years.
The county is going to build a great park where the green space is along Memorial (Little over 12 acres). Memorial has tons of stuff coming. If we could get some retail in the area and create a bigger plan for the overall area then it would have a great live work play feel. Many of the neighbors that have moved to WOH in the last 10 years get together and do many things together. It does have a family feel, and yes an urban feel
Hoept that helps

Thanks eibua.
The area that you are describing along Memorial, is the patch of trees and apartment buildings in-between Candler and Columbia?
I am looking at East Lake Terrace, White Oak Hills, and Belvedere Park areas. ELT/WOH feels more urban but Belvedere Park feels more suburban-ish. Lots of good stuff happening here - looks like many young couples are moving into old homes and doing renovations. lots of investors doing flips too. Lots of newer construction in WOH, near Shoal Creek Park area, and some along Glenwood next to the golf course. Are you familiar with the neighborhood associations? Do you know when they meet? I'd like to make a visit and meet some of my future neighbors for a feel of the area.

Also, do you know of any plans along Glenwood, McAfee and Candler areas? I agree with you on the retail. Seems like there is lots of excitement about the Walmart coming in, but it would be even better to see more local area businesses setting up shop over in this area. This area is just so close-in to all the good happenings north of Memorial that it'll just be a matter of time, I hope.
