To be honest, I would rather not confront thieves. It's not worth risking myself over near minimum wage. If it's that big of a problem, they need to hire security or I'm not sure if you can hire police but perhaps they need to hire people who are actually qualified to arrest individuals because kicking them out the store won't deter thieves.

I swear I had a customer come up to me and ask what our policy is on theft...like what would we do. They even told me they stole at another store location. Just to give you an idea of how much they don't give a **** and know they can get away with things. And this is Georgia too...you get criminalized easier here for crimes like shoplifting.
Working at Publix in Birmingham, I used this tactic as I watched 2 middle income, young white women use the rotisserie chicken dinner bag to add items to instead of what comes in the dinner. I offered them a basket and spooked them out the store.

Well yeah, Perimeter is obviously a business center. I would know as I work there, but in line with the thread, I'm referring to South DeKalb. A business center in the northern stretches of the county doesn't seem to be doing much for the economy of its southern counterpart.

I should have been clearer, but S. DeKalb and its lack of a business center, is my concern.

Creating one, could help improve S. DeKalb's economy, and also reduce the city's traffic by lessening the influx of commuters heading to other business centers like downtown/midtown and perimeter. I've seen how bad I-20 is in the morning and evenings, so maybe a center along this corridor can help turn things around.

I work in Perimeter Center as well. I also used to live in South DeKalb. To put it in perspective for others, my current employer is at least 25 miles away from most spots in South DeKalb.

One of the many reasons why I left both South DeKalb and Clayton years ago was the lack of corporate jobs/business centers. As you stated, a business center somewhere along I-20 would work wonders for the area. Although office space is not as sought after as it once was, placing office buildings near Stonecrest Mall in its infancy would have done more for the area than some of the now-dying big box retailers.

Kensington Station area would be a great location for a South DeKalb business district. DeKalb Co is already planning it's county offices over there. Lots of bus routes offer transfers to that station and it connects to Decatur, Atlanta, Airport, Midtown, Buckhead, and PC.

It certainly seems that way. Ironically, the disappearing big box retailers could still be in business if they had an actual business community to consistently buy and add to their bottom line. Hopefully a business center of some sort develops in the coming years though. South DeKalb could really use it.

I always thought the area around Kensington Station could be a business center as well. It already has the executive park office buildings around it. The buildings just need more visibility as I'm sure most people forget they're there or just don't know about them at all.

I believe there was once plans to put a college across the street from Kensington to create an educational district, but it doesn't seem as if anything ever materialized. I was recently reading about the Kensington-Memorial Drive Overlay, and saw some mention of this area becoming a Downtown DeKalb similar to Downtown Decatur.

Yeah...my supervisor made it known during a meeting that thieves don't have a certain skin color. Sad that that had to be said but it did...I do live in the boonies. You know, someone I know told me that the main people who he used to see stealing in one of the stores he used to work at were white men in business suits, which I found interesting. I believe it is easier for people who are white to steal versus people who are black because a lot of times, white people aren't being watched and can just do whatever.

And those bus routes are some of the quickest ones I've seen in all of Atlanta/the metro area. The buses that run on memorial used to come about every 8 minutes during rush hour. There was another bus line that came every 15 minutes during rush hour. I know 15 minutes sounds long but a lot of people in GA think that's pretty good and so there. I think it would be great for people who use public transport (including buses).

I think someone also mentioned office spaces...there were some across the street from the station but it's been so long since I've been there. They were empty last time but I'm pretty sure they could be utilized. I feel that entire area has potential.

Atlanta Gas Light is building their regional business center along I-20 in DeKalb so hopefully this can spur similar development in the area. Maybe it could be the development needed to create a business center is S. Dekalb.
