I moved to New Orleans as I'm very interested in architecture and history. People are friendlier and while it has it's problems my life is much more laid back than in Atlanta, plus I get the benefit if I desire to be close enough to see family but far enough away to not have to.

I've bounced back and forth between Atlanta and Chicago for years. Though I love Chicago, I finally ended up settling in Atlanta. Atlanta is nice in that you can actually have a house with a yard in a neighborhood without having to drive an hour away from downtown. That's pretty unique--in Chicago and most other dense cities, you couldn't have a Virginia Highlands type house within 15 minutes of downtown no matter how much money you have to spend. Of course, that means there is low density here (which is what I miss most about Chicago, because it means you can walk), but the weather is better, the trees are beautiful, housing is reasonable (relatively speaking) and plane tickets back to other cities to visit true urban density are reasonable. So, while I hate all the driving in Atlanta, it is where I'll be staying.

I moved here from the NW with my husband. After four years, we are moving back West and I doubt coming back. I can't handle the traffic, the stress, the organized religion and narrow-mindedness, racism, crime (which I've witnessed and experienced). There are not many true outdoor outlets, unless you count subdivision walking trails? And the housing is really not that cheap if you want to live remotely near the city or someplace nice. Those who love shopping and restaurants will enjoy.

lledtru, where are you moving to? I'm planning to stick it out here a bit longer but I'm interested in moving back NW eventually myself.

You know, I visited OR last yr for the first time. We flew into Portland and then drove to Eugene...and it was very pastoral and rural. I was born and raised in southwest GA(bigtime farmland and outlying rural areas)...it felt very familiar to me. Reminded me alot of the GA landscape MINUS development and billboard signs. I did so enjoy OR for that familiarity, yet appreciated that it was so outdoor friendly.

My husband and I have talked about maybe getting a second place....down the road of course...but we really liked OR. Since we are runners, we loved the passion and history the area has for running. We actually ran a race in Eugene....so it was a very neat and humble experience.
