Buford are such an athletic powerhouse, they usually win or at least make it to the championship or final four every year in all sports. In that 5-A school population class there is hardly any match for them. They could probably whip up on most teams in the 7-A class, in basketball or football. Probably even hold their own against 7-A powerhouse Westlake.

Whats amazing to me is that these kids, underclassmen, are barely getting a chance to celebrate when they have to begin AAU season immediately. AAU has become more important than the high school season because that is where the reputations for eventual college scholarships are earned. Colon Sexton, Alabama and Wendel Carter, Duke were no named Georgia High School players until they blew up in AAU competition and now they are potential one and done NBA players.

Buford is like a private school and recruits a lot of local athletes. They also narrowly won the Georgia's Directors Cup in 5A last year over Starr's Mill by a few points only because they now cap points for the top 8 events. Starr's Mill actually beat Buford in total points by more than 100 at 1596 to 1482.

It looks like it's coming down to Starr's Mill and Buford again, and Starr's Mill may have an edge this year because they did better than Buford in football and basketball this year and they usually do better than Buford in Spring sports like Golf, Tennis, Lacrosse, Soccer, and it will be close in track and baseball.

It's awesome to see Meadowcreek winning state championships now. When I was in high school, Meadowcreek was always shat upon. Love that they're finally finding success (although their girls basketball team did win a championship many years ago).

Wow Norcross! Meadowcreek and GAC only a few miles apart.

Gwinnett County seems to produce many HS champions in several sports.

Yes.

Meadowcreek High School winning state championships (they also won the state championship in boys' Soccer in 2017) is an especially inspirational story given that they had struggled so mightily in their athletics program since the turn-of-the-Millennium.

Before turning things around in 2017 and going 7-4 and having their first winning season since 1990 and their first non-losing season since 1997, Meadowcreek's football program went through a particularly brutal stretch of games, losing at one point about 96 out of 97 games between 2003 and 2013, including going completely winless 8 times out of a 9 season stretch from the 2004 through the 2012 seasons.

So Meadowcreek coming out of a Gwinnett County basketball scene that was the most competitive in the state in the highest classification this past season and winning the state title against a traditional state power Norcross team that has beaten them the 3 previous times they met this season is quite an accomplishment.

(...I think that at one point, Gwinnett County might have had 7 boys basketball teams ranked in the Top-10 in the state's highest classification this past season.)

Yep.

With the growing population that is approaching 1 million residents and diverse demographics, Gwinnett County has grown into a powerhouse in Georgia and Southeastern U.S. prep/high school athletics.

Gwinnett County has basically become the powerful engine that powers a particularly strong Georgia high school/prep athletics scene that is recognized as a national hotbed for the recruitment of college athletic talent.
