Don't move to Roswell or Alpharetta or anything up 400, because you do not want a southbound commute on 400 (it's the worst gridlock). And just don't move anywhere that requires commuting on any freeway.

Sandy Springs is great. Live there. Be as close as possible to work, while also being centrally located, so you can check out the rest of the metro. That area is particularly perfect for that.

I would recommend the various apartments along Glenridge Dr, slightly inside the perimeter (285). Get a 1-year lease, then figure it out from there while you explore.

Explore all the cool neighborhoods of in-town for sure, and you might explore Vinings/Smyrna/Marietta on the west side, and Tucker/Chamblee/Brookhaven on the east side, all places that wouldn't be awful commutes to work.

And you might find out after a year that you prefer Sandy Springs. It's a good balance area, not too suburban while also being a little bit suburban. And definitely ideally located, especially if you work there.

Best of luck and welcome!

And really the best part of Sandy Springs is along Roswell Rd, and you're real near Buckhead, which has even more to offer. Chastain Park is the Buckhead (Atlanta city limits)/Sandy Springs border.

I think it would be best to focus your search in the Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area first. That area is Atlanta's 4th skyline, so it has the feel of a metropolis, but is close to your job and has Marta access too.

There is a ton of shopping (Perimeter Mall), and restaurants in the area. Also, for more nightlife options, the drive to Buckhead is only about 10 minutes on the weekend.

Good luck!

This post is a little dated, but wanted you to read this article about Sandy Springs that just appeared in my FB thread. I agree with others that Sandy Springs would also be a good choice, maybe the best.

Live in Sandy Springs.

Find a place where you can walk to work if you decide to. Believe me, some days, you might! It can take 45 minutes to drive 3 miles in Sandy Springs! Even if you never do, just having the option is nice.

After a year or so, you may discover you prefer another neighborhood, but nobody hates Sandy Springs and nobody would ever think you were strange for living there. It's active with tons of people and a very active after-work happy hour scene at the bars/restaurants around the area.

You may find yourself going into town on weekends, but you probably won't see the need during the week.
