If one of the males identified as being female. Ok. But lets not shut out the lady's opportunity to be Queen.
Me too. I thought they voted in a male and a female and not necessarily a couple that are a "couple".

Looks like the current rule is one boy and one girl but the students are petitioning to change that.

Why? To me it looks like the little darlings want to alter the rules to get their way this year. What happens next year when no female gets the nod again and the inevitable pissing and moaning starts all over?
I guess critical thinking is no longer emphasized in public education.

I would be okay with them just taking gender out of it for the time being (or making an exception), since it is kind of a novel situation.

If it looks boys are winning an unfair number of times they could go back to the "one of each" rule.

Exactly this. Nor at home.

Eyes glued to their devices, their sense of real social engagement and the material world slowly ebbing away...

Don’t be fooled. Many more are more active that when we were their age.

Active in what sense? Physically? Socially? Intellectually? Politically?

I agree because the king and queen don't necessarily need to be a couple. They are voted as individuals, I believe.
