I have a question for you guys. Is the second "t" in Atlanta pronounced or is it silent (Atlanta vs. Atlana)? I've heard people say it both ways, but which one is the proper way? Thanks!

The proper way is to pronounce the second "t", but it isn't necessary and most people probably don't pronounce it.

Or it's a soft "t", which means it gets lost in between the "n" and "a".

Well, being from NJ I can understand your dilemma.
First, and foremost- it's "Y'all"; not "you guys". The correct pronunciation would be; At-lan-ta. However, southerners- more importantly, Georgians pronunce it; At- lan-a. And for the unedgumacated, it's just 'Lana. |

Kind of like how New Orleans is pronounced either Nuwallins or Nyu-arlins, depending on what part of the state of Louisiana you're from. That whole Nawlins thing I think is supposed to indicate the Nuwallins pronunciation but every time I hear people say it NAHW-lins I think, "Nobody says it like that!".

...Except tourists. Same deal w/ ""Frisco".

When Katrina hit I remember that after about the 2nd week the national reporters who had been covering New Orleans all started calling it Nuwallins rather than the usual New Orleens (distinct 2 words) that most outsiders say. It was noticeable. I guess it was because they'd been living there for a few weeks and were getting used to the way the locals say it.
My husband says it the Nyu-arlins pronunciation...I say the Nuwallins one. ![]() |

So, do locals call is Frisco?

No. Some cheesy east coast singer probably made that up.

Makes me think of Crisco and then I start thinking of Fried Chicken.
I always call it San Fran...but that's just me being a dork. |
