I had a similar quandary in 2008. I was renting in Grant Park. I really liked living in town. The home prices were really high at the time. I looked at some properties in south Grant Park and it was way too sketchy. I started looking at 1BR condos in Midtown. It turns out I could get a nice 2BR/2BA house for the price of a 600 sq ft condo/flat in Midtown in Mableton. Lot of my friends joked with me that I was out in farm country. As fortune would turn, I could have bought a really nice 2 BR condo in Midtown if I waited 2 years. I'm pretty happy with my decision at this point. I am only 9 miles from Midtown and me and my wife go down there and to Inman Park, Midtown, United games almost every weekend. I have another friend who moved to East Point and he likes it as well. There's still some affordable housing intown but you have to be willing to move in a transitional neighborhood like Capital View or Pittsburgh.

I lust after Mabelton. Such nice houses, in my budget, with pools and tennis courts, and not far at all from getting around town. Just sucks that the schools aren't that great, which is the reason it's so affordable.
