Hi forum,

I posted back in November and you all were very helpful to me in my initial search for areas in Atlanta to consider. Our family is moving this summer from Northern Virginia (Arlington). We were looking for a semi-urban feel, which I am still drawn to, but due to taxes in the city and the fact that fewer high school aged kids seem to go to public schools in the neighborhood, we are leaning towards East Cobb/Marietta City.

Here are my questions:
1) What is everyone’s take on Walton from a non-academic standpoint? I hear over and over about its stellar academics and that is good because we come from an outstanding public school system. However, I have a painfully shy rising 10th grade boy and I worry that an ultra competitive environment may also be closed off socially. Maybe not, but I’d love feedback, as I have reservations.

2) Does Pope have a better reputation for new students? If so, what neighborhoods would you recommend we look for in the Pope High School district that are closest to SunTrust Park? I am looking for neighborhoods with lots of kids, preferably with middle and high schoolers and a strong swim/tennis and other social events so that my kids meet people and make friends before school starts.

3) What is the feedback from an academic standpoint on Marietta High? I know they have an IB program, but I am not as familiar with IB. Are all programs the same? Does Marietta have a good reputation with top GA and other colleges? In terms of community feel, Marietta city is my favorite. However, I’m nervous about the schools (and I say this as a teacher in a low-income school).

We have a rising 10th, 7th and 5th grader, but have been most concerned with the high schooler right now.

Thank you so much for your help!
