On the strength of Georgia Tech and Emory, Atlanta has landed on the list of the world's best university cities according to Times Higher Education, tied for 5th (with several others).

I really hate these lists, but in this case I have a real reason. It's not several others. They only include GaTech and Emory, when Emory wasn't even a part of the city until 2017, and Agnes Scott is pretty darn great too (is it in unincorporated area?). GSU does what GaTech and Emory doesn't. The AUC's been absolutely pivotal despite the inevitable financial issues that follow a business plan with a tightly wrapped endowment strategy. But I like that our unis cater to different groups rather than trying to be the best at everything equally. No one would know where to go.

We should be higher, ~California schools.

Were they referencing the city or the metro area? Either way, we take GSU and the AUC for granted, Morehouse and Spelman should be on the list of top universities in the nation but no one ever talks about them. GSU and other state schools (KSU, CSU, UWG...etc) fill in the gaps that the more expensive private colleges don’t cater to. Agnes Scott is top tier and Oglethorpe is decent. Why don’t we talk about these colleges?

"Have you ever wondered which city contains the highest number of Times Higher Education World University ranked institutions? Well you’re in luck because we’ve analysed our top 200 and top 500 universities to see which cities have the highest concentration of elite universities."
Like it or not, THE is using their list of top world universities. If your pet universities are not included, that is why.

On the second list, what is Atlanta’s 3rd university?

I think some of the criteria is based on research. KSU, CSU, etc. aren't research schools. GSU is.

If GSU is Top 500, then that is Atlanta’s 3rd uni.

Having two of the world's top 100 universities is a major point of pride for the city. As is the AUC and Georgia State. Higher education in Atlanta is an embarrassment of riches.
