Decatur area (scottdale) questions please help! (Lawrenceville, North Decatur: apartments, to rent, condos)

I need help please! I'm a grad student looking for a place to rent between emory and mercer university. I have been looking into some bungalows in the scottdale area (just north of avondale estate). Is this a safe place? Also, can anyone give me a any idea of how much utilities will run on a small house in this area.

What should I expect for utilities costs? I'm just looking for a rough idea and any input is greatly appreciated!

Scottdale can be a little rough IMO.
If you're looking for something that is convenient to Emory and Mercer, I would suggest N Druid Hills, or any of the neighborhoods that run up Briarcliff Rd. (the main artery between the two campuses).

Yeah, that area in Scottdale doesn't exactly fit between those two schools. Personally, I wouldn't be too fearful living where that house is. Not sure I'd want to live right on Valley Brook, but tucked off that road I'd not be scared. There are other areas of Scottdale that are pretty bad... just on the other side of the railroad tracks. But also a couple of nice subdivisons. It can change from good to bad to good quickly.

I can suggest a nice little area known as Druid Springs Condos, erstwhile Medlock Pines Apartments.The neighborhood is upscaling,virtually no crime and many of these condos are renting.The condos are located on Jordan Lane(no sign board yet) near the junction of Lawrenceville Hwy. The other end of the street is intersected by North Decatur Rd. Quiet neighborhood and quick access to all major arteries.
The utilities average: natural gas (one person)$35.00 p/month;electric bill(one person) $20.00 p/month
