People,

Y’all just need to listen to Mutiny77 on this thread. He is telling it like it is and speaking too much truth.

Brother Marks is holding it down as well.

I remember an Atlanta City school named for Alonzo Herndon. I just looked it up and found it was closed a couple of years ago. Apparently it had a good rating before it was closed.

There was an era when Atlanta might have been called a gay mecca or Moscow; another period when it could have been called a Carpetbagger or Yankee mecca.

Why not just call it Atlanta? A much more accurate and identifying term.
Depends on your age and your perspective.

Akron hasn't done anything interesting since The Black Keys and Lebron James so people my age or younger find it mildly interesting at best. But if I say it is 45 minutes from Cleveland people automatically know what I am talking about. I could talk about Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders or Devo but then I am just embarrassing myself. Maybe you enjoyed the Rubber Bowl back in the day. Whatever.

As far as Atlanta it is different things to different people. If someone wants to think of it is a Black Moscow why argue with them. It is just a weird analogy, for a number of reasons. Cities are different things to different people Atlanta can be something different to everyone contributing to this thread there is nothing wrong with that. It is diverse enough that I do not think it takes anything away from the city to be seen through whatever prism you see it with so long as the characterization is accurate and nothing disingenuous or intellectually dishonest.

Some see it at work similar to being a suburb of Cleveland; I sort of get that but there a ton of suburbs in between both cities but then I realize that no one outside of Ohio has ever heard of those suburbs. So potato potahto. It just isn't worth the argument.

On the other hand when you're actually in a city people have no problem letting you know that they're from a suburb of that city. Maybe it is different for larger cities like LA, Atlanta, New York, etc. But if you're from a suburb of Pittsburgh just say so; I don't care if I never heard of it and I'll probably forget after you tell me but I see no reason in acting as though things are any different.

What about California? I hear a lot of weird places all the time that appear to be suburbs or exurbs of some other city.

I used to get annoyed people saying they live in DC and like 90% of people you meet that live in that area do not live in DC, they live in Northern Virginia or Maryland. I think at this point those areas are so synonymous with DC no one even cares anymore it's like yeah you live 100 miles outside of DC but whatever.

That’s overly technical though....Northern VA is a suburb of DC, and ya`ll are living in similar cultural environments. So what’s the big deal?!? If someone travels, more people would know their hometown based on saying DC, rather than Alexandria or Fairfax Co... It`s like when I grew up in Suwanee and left for college. I’d say I`m from Atlanta and others would say they’re from Albany or some other po-dunk town, and people who were literally raised in deep Atlanta would correct me real quick. Lol... If that’s the point then stop claiming all the celebrities and cultural deities who technically aren’t from Atlanta either.

Well, seeing as how there are no more Carpetbaggers, I don't think it could still be called a mecca for them ...

Calling Virginia "Mother of presidents" is not like taking the name of one city, e.g., Mecca, Moscow, and applying it to another city. That was "OK" -- maybe -- for colonies, e.g., "New" Hampshire, "New" York, "New" Jersey, but as a city, like any other city, Atlanta deserves a nickname of its own.

Birmingham, for example, calls itself "the Magic City" (why, I have no idea).

Calling Atlanta a gay "Mecca" is hilariously stupid when you think of it. I do not think the real Mecca is very welcoming to gays.

So now Atlanta deserves a nickname of its own (for the record, it has had several over the years) but in your previous post, you said we should just call Atlanta Atlanta. So which is it?

It was nicknamed that because of its reputation as a boomtown. Oh, bitter irony.

Actually, Atlanta has had more than its share of nicknames over the years.
