At some point, not every piece of land that once seemed essential to the transit agency actually is essential for transit purposes. Sometimes, MARTA hopes someone else will view the land as essential. That was the case at a shuttered park and ride lot at the Oakland City Station in Southwest Atlanta.

That’s not the case of a shuttered park and ride lot in Stone Mountain, in eastern DeKalb County. The 2.3-acre tract is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of 4th Street and Manor Drive, a few blocks east of the Stone Mountain Village.

Sell it please. No need for government to hold on to land with real use to them.

One of city of Atlanta's greatest successes in recent years has been selling it's surplus property.

I'm conflicted on what to do with it.

On one hand, you could use it as a future parking lot for a future commuter rail station that serves Stone Mountain, but it's a bit of a walk away from the station (~750ft).

Another option is to keep it and turn it into a transit center in addition to any future train station a few blocks away. MARTA has a proposal from their Comprehensive Operations Analysis for an ART route running up Memorial Dr from Kensington St. to roughly Stone Mountain, as well as a frequent route running down from Doraville Station to Memorial Dr.. Gwinnett's transit plan long-range phase-2 has a BRT route proposed to run from Indian Creek to Snelville, as well as an Express Bus routes from Loganville to Decatur, both passing stone mountain. The empty lot could be a transfer / terminus station for all of this.

Heck, ARC's Concept 3 even has Stone Mountain shown as a potential transit hub.

A disconnected parking lot for a hypothetical station that is has no real backing at this point does not sound worth holding on to.

I don't think MARTA should be in the parking business anyways.

Which is why I brought in the other proposed bus routes. They're not funded yet, but they very well could be soon enough. MARTA might not should be in the parking business, but it can be in the transit-center business.

I am sure Stone Mountain would rather see the lot get built, adding to it's tax base.

As opposed to the development anchoring ability of building a new transit hub?

The lot in question is not near Memorial Dr or railroad ROW.

Maybe it was part of Atlanta Transit Company, when MARTA purchased the private bus company
