What I meant was that generally "laughing all the way to the bank" refers to a sum that would lead to a whole new level of lifestyle. Early retirement, vacation homes, luxury living. $600k is a good chunk of change, but split amongst even two people is not enough to massively change one's life. Could it add a good deal of security and maybe put a down payment on a house and a few other things? Absolutely. Are you going to be flying in your private jet to your private villa in France? Probably not. And yeah...$10k is still a decent dent. It doesn't really change the outcome, but it's notable.

You're going to ridiculous extremes here. Most people's lives would be massively improved in many ways by simply paying off their mortgage. I know this from first hand experience. I'm not sure where you're getting this Richie Rich stuff.
