I wouldn't mind Vinings becoming a city, just for the solidified sense of place. When you're inside a city limits of somewhere, it feels more clear where you are and what that place is.

This. Mableton definitely needs to be a city--if anything

Mableton is the "Tucker of Cobb County".

Yes, Vista Grove should join the City of Atlanta.

If they name it anything other than Mableton it would be a shame.

As for East Cobb, I really don't like that as a city name. Northwestern portion of the metro area and with the name "East" in it is confusing. I know that is what everyone has called it forever but as a city it should stand out from its county. Johnson Ferry, GA?

Why won’t they go for Marietta annexation?

Based on the negative reaction on next door to the proposal for an East Cobb city, I don’t think it’s going to happen.

The feedback mostly boils down to “what problem would this solve” (east Cobb is great) and “why would we want another layer of government?”

A feeling that is not often felt around Atlanta.

Yes, East Cobb is a poor name.

But Hell-to-the-Naw to Johnson Ferry, GA.

This is what needs to happen in Cobb County.

Annexations and Incorporations. Incorporations can be as cities or as townships.

1. Marietta: Semi-major annexation, especially to the west, southwest, south, and north.

2. Kennesaw: Major annexation, especially to the south and southwest.

3. Acworth: Major annexation, especially to the east and to the south.

4. Smyrna: Annexation, rounding out and squaring out its borders.

5. Powder Springs: Major annexation, especially to the north, northeast, and southwest.

6. Austell: Major annexation, especially to the northeast.

7. Annexed by the City of Atlanta: Vinings, Cumberland, Windy Ridge, eastern Windy Hill Road, Riverline Area, and Six Flags Area.

New Cities and/or Townships in Cobb County

8. Lost Mountain: The rest of West Cobb not annexed by Marietta, Powder Springs, Acworth, and Kennesaw. Mainly the Harrison High District, parts of the Kennesaw Mountain High, and Hillgrove High districts.

9. Mableton: Will mainly include its historical, zip code boundaries.

10. Noonday Creek: In North Cobb and "western" East Cobb. Mainly the Kell High District and about half of the Sprayberry High district. Centered on Canton Road. Will include about 2/3 of the Town Center Mall Area (to be renamed "Barrett Park Mall" and "Barrett Park" area).

11. Shallowford Heights or Shallowford Forest: In East Cobb. Includes all of the Lassiter High District and most of the Pope High district.

12. Sope Creek: In East Cobb. Includes all of the Wheeler High district--plus the Old Canton Road/Murdock Road/Castell Road Corridors of the Pope High District, the Chattahoochee Plantation Area of the Walton High district, and the current western arm/finger of the Walton High district.

13. Willeo Park: In East Cobb. Includes the rest of the Walton High district and the Bishop Lake Road area of the Pope High district.

14. Sandy Plains: In East Cobb. Includes the rest of the Sprayberry High District. Centered around Sprayberry High School and the quaint neighborhoods closest to the school--Kincaid Elementary, Addison Elementary, and the Sprayberry-zoned section of Mountain View Elementary. Will also include Chestnut Springs in the current Walton High District (zoned to Kincaid).

That is a really good question.

The people pushing for a new city in East Cobb will not go for being annexed into the existing City of Marietta proper because (even though most of East Cobb has a Marietta mailing address) East Cobb and Marietta proper are two very different communities with two very different civic identities.

East Cobb self-identifies and is recognized by many as being an upscale suburban enclave with a very affluent image that is largely dominated by very low-density single-family home residential development.

Marietta proper is a racially, ethnically and very socioeconomically diverse urban city (with a relatively very high poverty rate of 19%) with a mix of real estate development styles that range from high-density historic in the Marietta Square to areas of high-density multi-family and single-family development beyond the Square, to areas of heavy retail and industrial commercial development along a corridor like U.S. 41 Cobb Parkway.

People in Marietta proper most likely do not want to share control over governance issues (like zoning, code enforcement, sanitation and public safety) with an outlying area like East Cobb.

Just like people in East Cobb likely would not want to share control over governance issues with an established urban city like Marietta.

Despite both being in Cobb County and largely sharing Marietta mailing addresses, East Cobb and Marietta proper are two completely politically and socially different areas that most likely would not mesh well at all under one municipal government.

East Cobb wants to function as an upscale single-family home residential enclave, while Marietta proper wants to function as a diverse established urban city.
