ATLANTA - The busiest road in Midtown Atlanta will be partially closed the day before the Super Bowl for an awards show.

There are detours planned and years of thought has gone into it. Officials just want residents to put some thought into their plans as well.

We've been meeting for about two years on how best to tackle this here in Atlanta,” said Super Bowl Host Committee official Amy Patterson.

Monday's meeting is part of a plan to give residents a five-week head start before roads are first affected on January 26..."

Beyond absurd. There is 0 reason to shut ANYTHING down until the game itself, and only the roads immediately around, and even then I strongly question why we're shutting down public roads for a private event at all. The only closures should be for traffic management, not outright closures. But starting TWO WEEKS ahead of time is the height of stupidity and lack of respect for this city. I seriously hope we get an ice storm with 2+ inches of solid accumulation Friday through Sunday that weekend.

One of the biggest events in the world, tens of thousands of people in a small area; the roads around the venues need to be closed to cars. They can keep it open for streetcar, buses, emergency vehicles but we don't need commuters cutting thru there when there are alternative routes other than cutting thru Downtown.

One of the most entertaining things is watching people navigate with lane or road closures.

Looking at traffic plans from last year's superbowl, the timing of the closures is about the same as what was done in Minneapolis.

And what about the people that live and/or work there? Not "cutting through" but actually need to go to and from local destinations. Just like the stupid peachtree road race, or the idiotic publix 5k where they seal large stretches of major roads, you're telling people "you don't matter as much as our corporate overlords."

Since this is Downtown and there is transit accessibility (MARTA rail, MARTA bus Xpress bus, CobbLinc, GCT.) People have 5 weeks to make plans.
Peachtree Road Race is an Atlanta institution, everyone knows when it's going to happen. So just join the fun and chill out.

Oh the irony of spending millions more than originally budgeted for a pedestrian bridge that citizens didn’t want, only to close the entire street it crosses for the first event for which it’d actually be useful.

Again with the technical truth but practical lie of "transit accessible." Not a lot of people can get to the transit to get to those places! Do you tell someone who's boss still expects them to come in to just "join the fun and chill out???"

Guarantee it'll be open for certain limos and so-called vips traveling by private car.

If you can't plan ahead and figure out an alternative route to your destination, it's your fault. These are events that everyone knows about well ahead of time, not accidents that happen all of a sudden. So, yes, chill out.
