Hi everyone,

We are thinking about relocating to the ATL area and I might be taking a job on Powers Ferry Road NW. I guess it is close to where the 75 and 285 meet. I would like to keep my commute to an hour. I was hoping to get a good idea from you all about what areas we should be looking at. We would like a nice safe family friendly location. Budget for a house would be around 350k. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You might see my many posts about central Sandy Springs(where we just sold our house) and I'll jump in here...plenty of homes from the 1950s-70s in the price range you are seeking. Great schools, family friendly and 10 minutes from Powers Ferry Rd(back roads at that). DW used to commute to Galleria and could easily get there in 10-12 minutes. Check it out!

It all depends what kind of house you want and what public schools do you want - or is that an issue? Do you want a swim/tennis neighborhood? Family friendly? I would suggest Marietta- but that is assuming you have a family? Sandy Springs is great too. We used to live in Smyrna years ago- when it started "booming" and we really loved living over there- easy commute to where you are moving.

Good Luck!

for 350K you can find something anywhere, as everyone state you need to state what is important to you and your family before we can provide suggestions.

At this point I'd suggest East Cobb.

I'm not that familiar with the towns north or Marietta, but let me just say that you have some sweet choices by not having to drive downtown.

Woodstock and Canton could easily be over an hour commute to the Powers Ferry area. When there is an accident on I-75 S- it gets really bad- and that happens probably once a week then throw in some rain and well, it is a very ugly commute.

Roswell- depends what part of Roswell - if you're on the Sandy Springs side- not too bad, but if you are on the E. Cobb part of Roswell- it can take a while.

Alpharetta- again- depends on what part.

We have owned 3 houses in the Atlanta area- the biggest thing for us was accessibility- how easily could we get to GA 400 and/or the interstate. Also- make sure you have a few options with backroads.

Good luck! It's a buyer's market and you will have plenty of options.

We just moved to woodstock at the end of February - Towne Lake.
My DH is working @ 285 / W paces.

Here is a thread I recently posted about his commute.
Woodstock Commute - Followup

We absolutely LOVE this area. Schools are excellent...I'm very impressed.

It's very suburban...so if that appeals to you, I would suggest keeping this area on your list to at least look at.

Good luck with your search! It was exhausting and stressful for us. We tried every area of town surrounding Smyrna. We are very happy with our choice. I'm sure you will find an area that is a perfect fit for you as well!

K

Thanks for the response K. It is so hard to decide on where to live out there. Home prices are very attractive and we hear that family life is very good out there as well. We hope to find out perfect fit area like you did. Our concern is the commute. Everyone always talks about how bad it is. We are a bit scared of that. : )
