Clarkston approves first tiny home community in Georgia - On Common Ground News - 24/7 local news

Quote:
The City Council voted unanimously for the project on May 7. “The Cottages on Vaughan” will be situated on a half-acre lot centrally located one block from downtown Clarkston, and will include eight tiny homes on permanent foundations, ranging from 250-492 square feet.

Clarkston Mayor Ted Terry said he is excited about the concept.

“We’re creating our future world,” said Terry. “We are proud to partner with the MicroLife Institute on this innovative new approach to housing. “We recognize that the past 50 years of urban sprawl has segregated communities, contributed to global warming, and exacerbated housing inequality. By experimenting and innovating with new development ordinances, we are able to allow a greater range of housing options.”

The homes will range from $100K to $110K and are expected to get under way immediately, Terry said.

It'll be a cute time capsule in 20 years when people look back and say, "OMG, remember that ridiculous tiny home trend in the the early 21st century? There's a place you can visit where they actually built some of them!"

You know, kind of like these:

You ever consider that the 20th century trend of giant homes might be more of the fad? These "tiny homes" are decadent compared to the one room houses previous generations had.

Wonder what it costs to build these.

Imagine it cost much more than a say a 3000-4000 sq ft house on the same 1/2 acre lot.

Sounds like a good opportunity to perhaps buy all 8 and then rent them out. 8-10% returns perhaps.

Oh, come on, ATLTJL, don't be such a curmudgeon. These little cottages are pretty cool. Assuming they are built with good quality, they'll provide nice, low-hassle housing for folks who don't need or want a lot of space.

Personally I'd rather live in one of these than in a small apartment. You'd have your own rocking chair front porch and a nice common area.

They could be. But it's a fad that's lasted 40 or 50 years. By that metric, almost anything could be called a fad.

I was kind of joking about the tiny houses. But even the biggest supporters surely admit they'll never be for anything more than a niche audience. I know getting a house for $100k seems like a pretty good deal... but when you calculate how much you're paying per square foot, it's really not a very good deal at all.

There's no community center is this development and no washer/dryer connections in the houses. Where are these people supposed to do their laundry? I guess the laundromat. Or I guess they could do it in the sink. Looking at the closet and storage space, you wouldn't really be able to own very many clothes at all.

The first picture--are they envisioning a mom, dad and two little boys living in a 250-492 square foot house??

What, you don't think a mom should share a queen sized bed with two sons?

Elitist!!!!
