Did anyone else see that the Olympic torch was lit this morning around 9:15? I tried to take a picture while stuck in traffic, but a truck blocked my view from the northbound lanes.

They've been doing periodic testing of it as of late.

I wonder why. It rather flies against tradition, no? I thought that it was only to be lit during the ceremony, and then only in the host city.

One of the reps from Georgia State said a while back that they've been testing it periodically and trying to find a way to feasibly/sustainably light the torch. He stated that it burns an unbelievably high amount of natural gas to keep it running.

I hope Andrew Young doesn't get wind of this.

given the context of the video i don't think he hates the torch itself, just where they put it. three stories over a four lane road that goes between two parking lots was a bad location to begin with, and the design of the... whatever it is that holds it up, looks like a piece of highway or electric infrastructure.

It wasn't so bad in its original location, right beside the Olympic Stadium. On its own, the mass expanse of scaffolding is kind of ungainly.

It's an.....unusual design. I remember a couple of pundits during the Games saying that the cauldron looked like a McDonald's French fry box.
