I am contemplating taking a job in the Carrollton area. I have two middle school girls and public schools are a top priority. At first glance, it looks like all the good school systems are in North Atlanta. Can anyone advise if a good school system exists within an hour commute to Carrollton? I am looking for an upscale community and willing to spend $700k-$1M. Places like Buford are almost a two hour drive in the morning with traffic according to Waze. Johns Creek is about 1.5 hours. So I have quite a dilemma it seems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fayette County would be the best of the lot.

I would suggest looking into the Northgate High cluster in Coweta County, specifically the area that feeds into Madras Middle School.

On Zillow, Madras has a rating of 9/10 while Northgate has a rating of 7/10.

McIntosh High in Peachtree City is the best public school south of I-20. It's usually rated in the top 10 in the state for standardized test scores. I think a couple of years ago it was #5 in the state for SAT scores beating most of the affluent northside public schools.

Peachtree City is a master planned affluent city on the southside of Atlanta populated by Delta Pilots, consultants, and other white collar professionals. It's known for its 100 miles of golf cart paths. The high school kids can also drive golf carts to school. The only downside is from Peachtree City to Carrolton is about an hour commute.

As Citidata18 mentioned, Northgate would probably be your next best option. It's usually the 4th best school on the southside behind McIntosh, Starr's Mill, & Whitewater in Fayette County. From Arbor Springs neighborhood in the Northgate district to Carrollton is about 40-45 minutes.

Arbor Springs Plantation

You could also consider Central High in Carrolton. It's a good school, but not as highly rated as McIntosh or Northgate.

Based on your criteria, needs, and location, I highly recommend:

The Bremen City Schools

The Northgate High Cluster in Coweta County

The Alexander High Cluster in Douglas County

The Carrollton City Schools

The Central High Cluster in Carroll County

The South Paulding High Cluster in Paulding County

I agree with PTC Dad recommending Peachtree City or east Newnan (like Arbor Springs neighborhood). As PTC Dad mentioned, Peachtree City schools are the best in south side, comparable to best schools in north side. But it takes one hour or so from PTC to Carrollton through local highways, so if your schedule is like working everyday on weekdays, east Newnan might be a good alternative option with 40-45 commute. But if your work schedule is flexible like 2-3 days on weekdays, PTC should be perfect for you and your family. I know a few of professors and doctors working for Univ of West Georgia in Carrollton and living in Peachtree City, and all of them appear to be satisfied with commuting from PTC to Carrollton.

Bremen City Schools are actually quite excellent and a very easy commute to Carrollton.

However, looking at your price range, you'd probably be much happier in PTC all things considered. PTC is definitely the most affluent community nearest Carrollton so you'd fit right in while still being able to comfortably afford the best housing. Carrollton is a consistent hour away from Peachtree City and much of the commute is on rural back roads.

BTW, you were wise to count out the north side. Waze's estimated arrival times to north side from a place like Carrollton is usually just a best case scenario. What often happens to me is that I'll start driving and then about 20 minutes in the ETA gets later and later and it will throw up "Traffic is building ahead" signals constantly.

Why wouldn't you recommend Newnan High cluster? The portions of Coweta with the easiest commute to Carrolton would be north or west of Newnan. Little suburban growth yet on that side. Would definitely want to live west of 85 if I were to live in Coweta and commute to Carrollton.

But I like the Carrollton City Shcools, the Central cluster in Carroll and the Bremen cluster as well. Any reason you didn't mention Villa Rica? Guess it just depends on how developed of a suburban infrastructure the OP wants. But along with that comes traffic and long commute.

Aries4118 I forgot about Bremen City Schools. That's the highest ranked school in the area. It's ranked higher than Northgate in Coweta.

Bremen High School:

True. But west and northwest of Newnan proper is sparsely populated (and zoned for Newnan High). North of Newnan is the Northgate High Cluster. That’s why recommended it and not the other Coweta County clusters.

You’ll also notice that the Northgate High Cluster is my recommendation that is the farthest from Carrollton. I did not recommend areas farther away than Northgate.
