Don't know if this has been posted before but I accidentally stumbled upon this:

Source: Giving Atlanta Mountains of its Own - Travel Life

Photos appear to be looking due south - unfortunately this affect would also eliminate S.Fulton and Hartsfield Jackson Airport -- but I like the view.

-----

I personally have always wondered what would Atlanta be like if it were neighboring mountains within view of its skyline, or if it were built on a ocean coast... that would give Atlantic Station a new meaning. I'd invision the coastal parts to be much like Savannah...

thoughts?

Real life is fine. Downtown Atlanta is on a ridge looking down on the rest. Try driving in Atlanta highway/Marietta from the Vinings area in Cobb County.

And you only need to drive a little over an hour to see mountains like that.

I used to work on the 38th floor of the Georgia Pacific Tower. In addition to the amazing city views, on a crisp Fall or Winter day the mountains were spectacular from up there. That was a wonderful place to be for nine years, in multiple ways. I still miss working Downtown, it was a lot of fun.

If that were a real photo it would be a very old one because developers would have blasted those mountains out of existence in order to build the airport and 2-3 stadiums.

As it is, it reminds me of a small Colorado town skyline minus the snow.

It definitely bugs me that an Atlanta or a Charlotte wasn't able to develop in/near the Appalachian Mountains. Sure, in a lot of ways it's not practical, and it would probably be way more expensive, but it would be aesthetically amazing.

Also, one could argue that sprawl would have been diminished in favor of better public transport and higher density housing with that type of geographical limitation too, similar to other larger coastal/mountainous cities. It would have been neat to see for sure.

I do love cities like Asheville and Pittsburgh, but the former isn't even close to being a large city yet, and the latter doesn't have mountains per se, just some incredible hills.
