Good afternoon everyone,

I just got a job at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Georgia. I want to live closer to Atlanta and was wondering what areas I should be looking at in between the two that would not make the commute to work or ATL horrible.

I also wanted to know if I decide to live in ATL how would the commute to and from work be? Any advice would be great!

I assume, Douglasville, Smyrna and Mableton. Maybe South Fulton or Coweta County?

I had a friend that used to teach there for many years - she lived in Smyrna/Mableton.

Douglasville may be a good option of you're looking for a halfway point between Atlanta and Carollton. It has all of the generic restaurants and retailers you can think of. It is very blue-collar and family-oriented though.

From downtown Atlanta, you'll be looking at a 45 minute drive each way, at least.

From Smyrna/Mableton, that's easily going to be a 1+ hour commute each way.

It might be important to tell us more about you, what you're looking for, and why you want to be closer to Atlanta.

There is a difference if you're looking for good schools vs. a singles scene.

Budget always matters too.

I think Douglasville/Austell/Mableton would be your best bet. Carrollton to Atlanta is not a fun drive at all even if traffic is good.

I did the Carrollton-Atlanta comute for years, it is not fun...and easily over an hour at times because the main road between the two is often one lane. Honestly, Carrollton isnt bad, theres a vibrant downtown and local arts scene. Lots of festivals and outdoor music. I'd live in Carrollton over any of the surrounding areas. Douglasville is going downhill.

I wouldn't rule out living in Villa Rica. It's smaller than Carrollton but it's a quicker drive to both UWG and to ATL than starting from Carrollton.

Can you tell us what kind of housing you want, what your budget is, and any other details about what you're looking for? Apartment, townhome, condo, house, cheap, mid-range, pimp money, quiet, busy, "vibrant", more suburban, more bougie hipster... There will be many suggestions, but we're all just shooting from the hip unless we know what you're looking for.

The commute from anywhere along 20 on the west side isn't going to be bad as you'd be going mostly against the flow.
