There's a thread elsewhere on C-D about why Asian immigrants (including Indians) do so well in school (typically). Some people said that when you come from a very poor country, it makes you have a very intense focus on doing whatever you can to elevate your situation and that most people growing up in a rich country can't relate to that sense of "edcuation is everything."

The same probably applies to Americans living in poverty. I have no doubt that this gal is incredibly smart anyway, but I'm sure that when one is homeless, or living in extended stay-type places like she was, the desperation of that situation puts you in high gear to make education a number one priority above anything else. (The article described how in high school she would study in the light of the burner of the stove of her extended stay hotel room. And study in the car. That level of dedication is what I'm referring to.) I'm so glad it paid off for her.
