This is my front yard:

You can't tell from here but it's 4.5 feet off the ground. It disturbs people when they walk by on the sidewalk and there's a mower at head level.

So, we got rid of the lawn....

I used to use one of those at the townhome I stayed at going to college in upstate NY. They work well, except that they don't mulch, so you'll probably want to compost and return the nutrients from the compost back to the yard on occasion.

How often should you mulch when you cut the grass?

Paid $100 at Home Depot five years for a used Murray with a Briggs and Stratton engine (push mower - gas powered)....it's still going strong with only one tune-up to-date!

That's a very nice-looking front yard. Neat. :-) We'd like to do something similar to that with the sides of our house eventually (rock and/or flower gardens and a walking path instead of grass).

Thanks! It's coming along...been a year in progress so far and still a lot more to go. I have a lot of shade so I am challenged by finding shade and drought tolerant plants. Irises and other bulb/corm/tuber types are good. Sages, too, but they really prefer sun. Some species grow like crazy no matter how much light you do or do not give them.

And we still have one side and the backyard to do. The back, though, we do want to try to grow a small patch of lawn...though probably not pure grass...a mix of clover and grasses...something that doesn't need fertilizing or a lot of water or a lot of direct sun.

Laying those flagstone was a workout! That stuff isn't that expensive...about $200 +/- $30 for a ton. We probably laid about 1.3 tons down. We got it at S&S Stone in Doraville....

Oh, and you really can't see the garden from the street because the yard is elevated. When you pass by all you really see is the granite retaining wall and the liriope. It's kind of a surprise when you come up the steps.
