Hey there.....

My girlfriend and I are looking at possibly moving into the area around Adams Park, Beecher Hills, and Peyton Road. With current home prices, we've noticed that it's possible to get a nice house on a large lot without spending very much money in these areas.

My question is this.....we are white, and we know that the area is over 95% black. Are we likely to face resentment if we buy in this area, due to our race? We tend to be quiet neighbors who keep to ourselves, but we don't want to live in an area where people will make it clear that we aren't wanted.

Thanks for any input

Dignan

umm, no I don't think so. From what I've heard most of the young white people moving into the intown black neighborhoods have been well revieved by their neighbors. For now that isn't a problem. Keep in mind though that a lot of this gentrification is pushing many poor black people and other minorities out of their neighborhoods which is causing some resentment and tension. If this heavy gentrification continues, the battle for control of these neighborhoods will likely continue.

The neighborhoods that you've named are desirable areas (nice homes, close to city, and low crime). Although I can't make generalizations about the residents I'm sure many if not most of them are college educated professionals (at least those I personally know). I don't think these neighborhoods are candidates for the typical gentrification that we have seen in some Atlanta neighborhoods, because the neighborhood is not run down and the residents are not poor.

Adams Park is one of my favorite Atlanta neighborhoods. Although it may be less expensive than similar stocked neighborhoods (Morningside, Lavista Park for example) it is not a cheap neighborhood to buy into. If you can find a 3/2 (That is not a fixer upper) for around 200k it is a "steal of a deal". Here is the neighborhood website.

Adams Park

As far as your concern about not being welcomed I don't think you have anything to worry about. Let me rephrase that... I know you don't have anything to worry about. For one thing there are other white homeowners in the community (always have been). Also, there is no reason for educated professionals to resent you for taking care of "your home".

Living closer to the city is now transitioning from a lifestyle choice to a luxury. If things keep going the way they are it will become a necessity for many. If you can find a nice home in a nice area at a bargain price it's a no brainer to me.

I appreciate the thoughts. The reason for my original question is as follows.

Five years ago, my mom passed away, and my brother and I inherited her house in Buckhead. Well, we happened to sell the house to a black family, and it happened to be one of the few black families who had ever moved into that neighborhood in Buckhead.

Neighbors that we had known for years, whom we had never suspected of being racists, came up to my brother and I and said to us, and I quote, "why did you have to sell to THOSE people???"

So, yeah, I was disgusted by that incident. But if my girlfriend and I move to SW Atlanta, I don't want us to be the "THOSE people" that everyone wishes hadn't moved in.

I think you should also see how active is the community, visit the npu community meeting and see do the neighbors care.
