urban neighborhoods in Atlanta
I am cross posting similar posts in various cities I'd like to look into moving to. I am a soon to be graduating student from Miami. I'm looking to move out of here to a new place. As I'd like to stay south, Atlanta is one of the top places I'd like to check out. I'm 22, basically like good live music, bars/pubs, and a good restaurant scene. I'm not the clubbing type. Are there places in Atlanta to live where I would not have to drive that much? I have a car but I'd be more interested in living in a neighborhood where it is a little more pedestrian friendly ,or at the very least I don't need to get on an expressway for 20 minutes just to get somewhere. As for jobs and rent, i'm a liberal arts grad so I wouldn't really be relegated to a specific industry...rentwise, I'm looking to get roommates because I figure it'd be an easy way to meet new friends, so I woulnd't want to spend too much on one room or anything

Does it have to be a large city, or would you be happy with a thriving music/restaurant scene and funky vibe?
Consider Austin, TX. See: Music of Austin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thinking of Moving to Atlanta
There are several places in Atlanta you can be in walking distance to shops, pubs, dining and etc--Virginia Highland, Edgewood,Midtown... only two places in south fulton I would recommend--East Point and Camp Creek.

East Atlanta Village is fun -- but if you do move here, be careful about locking up your car and your house. Never leave anything in your car that's visible. We've been having a bad crime wave for the last year or so. There's a few sites that keeps up with what's going on in the hood so you can see before you move. Here's one: EAV Buzz - Index

are these places within reasonable distance of Georgia State? I am considering going to grad school eventually and that would be the schoold I'd look to get into. I have heard of Inman Park, is that in the same league of these neighborhoods? Thanks for all the help, I'm excited to visit soon.

Decatur, East Lake, and Little 5 Points (neighborhoods associated are Lake Claire, Candler Park, Inman Park) are all on the east-west MARTA line. Goes DIRECTLY to GA State. Students take it all the time.
Inman Park is a grander version of Candler Park/Lake Claire. It's full of old Victorians, etc. It's a very beautiful neighborhood. Candler Park/Lake Claire are more eclectic, with Craftsman homes, though there are some Victorians and other styles mixed in. Both neighborhoods have a nice, walkable, urban feel. You'd be happy with either.

I love me some Inman Park - but of course I am biased as I live in the neighborhood.
Check out the neighborhood website at Inman Park.
Taking MARTA to Georgia State is a snap. MARTA also has a discount for students and faculty. MARTA - Exploring Atlanta - Colleges
The Inman Park MARTA Station is E3 (East line - stop #3) and Georgia State is E1 so its only 2 stops and no change of trains. Inman Park is also a park and ride station so you could park your car and jump on the subway.

Scooters are very popular in the city now, especially for students. You usually don't have to pay for a parking tag and they are CHEAP on gas...and not that expensive to buy, $1500.
The Candler Park station is E4. East Lake is E5.
