If you any views on them...I would love to hear...since you are a Cali native...
I have only been to those areas one time each for basically one night just stopping through. I went to a party at Hampton Homecoming at the newly built convention center a few years ago with some frat brothers there and 112 performed and it was cool then it was on to DC for Howard Homecoming the next day.

In Nashville I went on a quick trip to see a friend at Vanderbilt and stopped over at Fisk to chill for a bit as well.

They both seem like cool areas but I didn't stay long enough to get a true perspective.

Hampton Roads seems boring though but the Hampton University campus is nice.

Nashville is a country chic type of place and it had some appeal when I went. I might take a weekend road trip up there just to check it out one of these weekends.

As for the main topic, the idea that Spelman/Morehouse = rich and CAU = thugs is laughable. All those kids went to the same damn schools and got the same damn educations. The only difference is that the buppies go to S/M and the working class kids go to CAU or Morris Brown. Yeesh.
Thank you for pointing that out Dora...but truth be told most of the S/M are population are working class as well and most of the students don't truly come from "Rich/Wealthy" households (I probably have a equal amount of friends from all the AUC schools worldwide as a CAU Alum (Morris Brown included). Let me add that "Thugs" can't afford the tuition at schools in the AUC with all of them costing over 20K per year.

Truth be told most Black Households are mostly all new money in comparison to their white counterparts. Anyways...

I've always found great inspiration & ringing truth and honesty to the Clark Atlanta University motto which I still apply to this day; “I’ll find a way or make one”!

True, true. By "buppies", I was really thinking more along the lines of two-parent household w/steady income on both sides. Money is stable (though tends to be a bit tight). Parents are middle management, maybe higher. Both parents went to college, and probably a set of grandparents somewhere. Whereas CAU/MB kids are more likely to be first generation, possibly from a single parent house, parents working for the city or the government, and basically lacking that whole Jack-and-Jill upbring. Nothing wrong with either/or, but the class distinction is kind of odd, especially with them all being in the AUC. (Has MB rejoined the AUC yet?) Actually, I completely forgot that CAU and Morris Brown are private schools - probably because they're rarely mentioned in the same breath as Spelman and Morehouse. Again, I'm wondering if that's a class thing.

And I DEFINITELY agree w/the new money thing. I'm not much of a fan of Chris Rock, but his bit about riches vs. wealth is dead on. My best friend married into wealth, and to quote Chris, "you can't get rid of wealth!" They could smoke crack from today until doomsday and never miss a house note. When Chris said that Oprah was rich, I thought, "No, she's wealthy." Then I took a look at the Forbes list and nearly passed out. I don't think Oprah even cracks the top 500 (I believe she was #512.)

Actually it's not odd at all...That's what makes the AUC so wonderful especially when Morris Brown was at full-strength. You really had four unique institutions and four different personalities all within walking distance from each other and you could take class at all of them (Where do you think Spike Lee took his Film Classes at? CAU). The atmosphere made for intense rivalries at Football and Basketball games and between Fraternity and Sororities as well.

Going to school in the AUC enabled me to obtain and strengthen my network of friends and connections across the US and abroad..especially when Morris Brown was there while I was in school. If stayed in State in California and accepted the scholarship I was offered and bypassed the full-ride CAU offered me my experience probably wouldn't of been as enriching as my AUC experience. You really had a chance to interact with people from a wide range of socio-economic and class levels from across the 50 States and from all over the world and I'm forever grateful for my 4 years spent at Clark Atlanta University.

Public HBCU's like Fort Valley, Albany State, Savannah State while draws most of it's students from The Public Urban High Schools in the State of Georgia (Tons of Fulton/Dekalb/Clayton County/Macon/Savannah/Augusta) and have a totally different atmosphere (from what I've seen on many road trips) than the private HBCU's in Atlanta. Most of those schools have a small population of Out-of-State Students which lends to the different atmosphere and atmosphere at those schools.

This just confirms what I always knew.I live a few blocks from Clark-Atl and I have had students rent from me that go to school at Tech.I have often heard of them mentioning how there friends houses have been broken into or been mugged in Home Park.I tried telling them that despite the appearance of how the area near The AUC may look(even though Home Park looks almost as bad, minus the crack-heads)Home Park is not that safe either becasue people dont expect what happens around there vs in Historic Westside/Vine City you kinda know to lock yor doors, pay closer attention like not leaving valuables on the car seat etc..That said, its not like I'm saying that Home Park is worse,I'm just saying its not what people think it is either.

Where would be a good place for a cousin of mine to go to?

Alabama A&M or Spelman (A&M fan here!)

NOTE: She wants to go into psycology. Some of her family members have gone to A&M. Spelman is also too expensive for her right now. So what school would be better.
